Hi, I am a college student who is unsure whether to withdraw from a class I feel that I might not get an overall good grade in. I want to withdraw, but my PARENTS are telling me not to. They are the ones who will yell at me and get mad at me if I get a bad grade in there. It will be me in the end who feels the outcome and consequences. So, do you think it should be my decision whether to withdraw from the class or not? I will be wasting about 250 dollars, but is it not better than seeing an F ? How can I persuade my parents that are strongly for not withdrawing? Should I make my own decision for this type or matter or just listen to my parents' decision and follow it? |

I think you need to go with your gut on this one and make your own decision. If this class is not something you have any interest in, then why would you pursue it. You are better off dropping the class and investing that time into something you enjoy and that will serve you in the future. Having said that, I know how strong the power of influence parents can have over our lives. From what I can tell, it will be very uncomfortable for you to confront them and go against their wishes. If you explain your overall vision and goals and show them that this class does not fit your master plan, they may be more understanding. Then again, they may not Ultimately it is your life and the sooner you can stand up for your own wishes despite how hard it may be, the better off you will be. |

__________ I went ahead and did it.. No turning back! I haven't told my parents yet, I'm scared. I might get in serious trouble. But, maybe I can hide.. | |

As someone who has been in the same situation lots of times, I would ask you: why are you getting a bad grade? Is it because you don't care and you've been pushed into studying by your parents? Is it because you do care but you don't like the subject? Or you're bored with the class? What is it? You need to work it out, whether you drop out or not.

Stick it out. If it's a requirement you'll have to take it anyway, and if you fail at least you'll learn something and be that much more prepared the next time. If your parents give you grief say "yeah, I screwed up. Here's what I'm going to do different: ..." And of course this/ is worth reviewing.
