Default Learning Japanese

After piddling around with learning Japanese for going on three years, I've decided to get my rear in gear and learn me some Japanese!

I'm going to be putting up videos on my blog via YouTube once a week, ideally on Mondays, as part of a YouTube collaboration led by CrimsonIgloo and BobbyJudo.

Here's my short introduction video spoken in Japanese. Since making the video, I've received a response video by BobbyJudo that pointed out some glaring flaws in my grammar, but he did give me some positive praise about my pronunciation and cadence.

I'll be putting up a corrected video next week as well as a video where I'll talk some more in Japanese.

If you'd like to get involved, just put up a response video of you speaking in Japanese to this video that explains the collaboration, and either BobbyJudo or CrimsonIgloo will make a response video to help you improve your Japanese.

I hope you succeed further with learning the Japanese language. I really love the language and I actually studied it for three years initially because one of my best friends was born in Japan.

I was just wondering but have you ever visited Japan? I hope to visit Japan when I am older.

Congratulations or making the decision to master a new language.l

I was interested in learning Japanese a few years ago for a college class, I used the Pimsleur approach and was able to do better than many of the native speakers, and I didn't even buy the textbook.

How are you learning Japanese? From a program or something else?

You could speak better Japanese than native Japanese speakers because you took a single Pimsleur course? Please clarify.

My family and I had a chance to visit Japan back in the early 90s, but we didn't go. You can read about all that in my blog post about it.

I'm using a combination of a Japanese-English/English-Japanese dictionary, flash cards, and doing YouTube videos where I talk for a little bit in Japanese.

Here's my latest Japanese video, where I talk about my goals to study in Japan via a college study-abroad program.

Please feel free to correct my grammer so that I can improve my Japanese. Thanks!

Like Joachim said, JapanesePod101's daily podcast is a real good one, but you might have to look through the archives if you're just getting started.

Otherwise, the best tutorial that I know of is just simply speaking and writing Japanese as much as you can and correct course along the way to improve.

I didn't know they have a premium section! I might have to check that out when I have some money (I already spent my online income on gas & DVD+Rs).

TheAndySan - J-Vid 03 - Exchanging Business Cards

In this video, I am exchanging business cards with CrimsonIgloo through the magic of YouTube. For your convenience, I have added subtitles in English after every sentence so you can read what we're saying to each other.

There ends my profound knowledge of Japanese. I had a chance to stay in Japan for six months and it was great.

Congratulations on your progress. Wish you good luck.
Here is a blog on Japanese life and religion that I found interesting.

I spent a good portion of my college life studying Chinese and I know learning a language can be very frustrating and slow going. Probably the fastest way to learn is by moving to Japan and enrolling in an intensive language course whereby you get reprimanded if you speak or use English. I recommend a minimum of 1 year abroad with the intent of staying longer. I know a French guy who went from 0 to fluency in 2 years this way. It will be the adventure of a lifetime. Trust me I've done it.

If you can't do that I recommend setting short term reachable goals as you seem to be doing. It's too frustrating to just say, "I want to be fluent", because really there is no end to the learning. Also surround yourself with as many Japanese people as you can and insist on speaking Japanese to them. And the number one thing to remember is to study with purpose and to practice with intent.
