Default Time Distortion

Does anybody know how to distort time in everyday surroundings. Apparently focusing on internal things can speed up time and focusing on a clock or something outside your mind slows down things. I'm not sure about this. Thoughts? Anyone practice time distortion?

You can actually cultivate this ability if you so desire. Some form of meditation will speed up the process greatly.

To quote something:
Quote:
As Einstein pointed out, time flows at different rates for each person. Some people have experienced their whole life flash before their eyes in a matter of seconds just prior to a sudden death-risking situation. Also dream researchers have discovered that a one minute dream sometimes feels like hours to a dreamer. In one experiment, hypnotized subjects were given imaginary tasks to perform in their minds -- like designing a dress and preparing a complicated meal. They were tricked into thinking they had an hour to accomplish their tasks, but they really had only 10 seconds. After 10 seconds had elapsed in world time, the hypnotized subjects experienced intricate and accurate detail in their inner perception that seemed to them to be a complete hour! Given the same tasks in the waking state often stymied them so badly that they couldn't think of a single dress design and actually prepared a meal in a very disorganized fashion. A posthypnotic interview revealed that the subjects experienced no difference in their "thinking" and that at no time did they feel hurried or speeded up. Time distorted thought thus seems to have superior clarity to normal conscious thought beset with constant distraction.
Focus on how the things around you seem to be moving at a low speed, or focus on how the things around you seem to be moving at a high speed. This is it, in a nutshell. This is pretty much all you have to do.

Mind, you won't actually distort time in the literal sense. You will sense that things are moving slower or faster, but it's only your awareness of time moving slowing or faster that changes.

Is it possible to control our awareness of time?

Apparently Remiel it is, but only if you apply some of the techniques Bradshaw discussed. For example, say a child is bored in a school lesson, they may be able to speed up that time by thinking about things that work at high speeds

Ever listen to your thoughts? They don't normally come in clear, timely sentences like mind readers hear them on tv. Same goes with dreams. You can push snooze in the morning, then have an epic adventure in dreamland only to wake a few minutes later, thinking for a sec it was your nightly feature presentation.

I think time is only physical, and as soon as the mind really kicks in, things get distorted. It's not too surprising, because if souls live on the astral plane, and bodies live on the physical plane, then we're living on two different planes of existence simultaneously (astral soul in a physical body).

How's that idea?

I think time is very subjective and it all depends on where you focus your mind. To slow down time and get more done you need to forget about it completely don't think about how many minutes seconds hours are going by. Just forget about time and focus as strongly as can you can on the NOW and try your best to get into that "flow state"

The more you focus on time the more real it becomes and by forgetting about it you enter the "timeless now" and that truly is "time distortion"

I haven't seen this particular Bandler training... but this is one of the best places to start.

Studying Hypnosis and/or NLP will help you recognize how you mentally code/perceive/create time.

A good starting place is to remember a point in your past where time seemed to move really fast or really slow.
  • As you look back at the memory, notice the visual qualities of the memory (movie or still shot... black & white or color... how bright is it... how close is it)
  • ... the auditory qualities of the memory (loud vs soft... does it sound close or far away... is there any timbre or echo)
  • ... the kinesthetic qualities (what are the sensations like... where are they located... are they flowing or fixed... what direction are they going)

When you understand your mind-body formula for moving time faster or slower... you will begin to be able to do it at will.

Keep in mind, this isn't necessarily an easy task... I've been working on this for a few years myself.

keep smiling,

Ben

If you're interested in time, you may also want to check out the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZPTI). It discusses the five different time perspectives we all have (past negative, past positive, present fatalistic, present hedonistic, and future)

I don't have any evidence to back this up, but I suspect people interested in personal development will tend to be much more skewed to future, and less present fatalistic.

I wrote an article about it where I include videos about the ZTPI and a summary:

My Favorite Free Online Personality Type Tests and Psychology Tests

I also think about time a fair deal, and this personality test was a real eye opener for me. There is an hour long presentation embedded on that page that you might find useful, I really enjoyed it.

Time slows down when:
-You are subject to acceleration
-You are near a gravitational field.
That is special relativity...

I find time to be relative to how interested or bored i am, with what i am doing.

So, if i am really interested and absorbed, i.e. the flow state, then time will go very quickly. Conversely, when doing dull activities time seems to drag.

Sounds simple, but it has connotations...

This means, that for me at least the speed at which time seems to pass, is relative to the amount of attention and conscious awareness i am investing in the activity. By focusing intensely and wholly, on as many aspects of the activity as possible, you can slow down time and achieve a super-human amount.

But then if you do something mindlessly, or on auto-pilot (similar to the flow state), then you will find time goes very quickly, but not a lot will be done.

So, you can stretch time and shrink it! To go on auto-pilot though, you need to find something that interests you even slightly...like music, or day dreaming, or driving

To slow time, snap back to the object whenever your mind wanders, discipline yourself and focus with fulll awareness, like meditation in action...

Slow your breathing, become aware of your body and then apply as much consciousness into the activity as you can. This also, is how success is achieved in my opinion in any endeavour...that is, for me intelligence = level of awareness that can be focused on the book/exam paper or whatever.

This might explain why sometimes u can read for hours, it goes quickly, yet you can barely remember any details! Then other times, you read it really carefully, time goes slowly (or seems to), yet you remember it all.
