I just watched this great talk on YouTube on how to maximize learning and effectiveness based on what we know about the brain: YouTube - Authors@Google: Dr. John Medina The speaker is the author of "Brain Rules" which is a book on how to apply 12 principles that we have discovered about how the brain works. He only talks about 2 of those rules in this talk. To summarize for those who don't want to watch an hour long talk... 1) 20 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 times a week measurably improves executive function, the part of your intelligence responsible for organization, motivation, focus, and self-discipline. It also has a mitigating effect on brain disorders including dementia and depression. 2) Stress that is random and uncontrollable will damage the brain and begin killing neurons. The biggest predictor of marital stability is whether the woman feels like the man is listening to her and that she is positively influencing his behavior. One of the biggest predictors of school success is the emotional stability of the student's home life. I hoped I've piqued someone's interest to go and listen to this talk for themselves! |
