Default Regulations for having an on-line business?

I have read a lot about setting up businesses on-line as there are so many entrepenurial people on these forums. My question is - are there rules and regulations by law that you have to follow in order to set up a business on-line? For instance, to set up a regular business (not on-line) you must register as a small business owner and pay a fee for a licensce (at least in my country) so I am wondering how it works for having an on-line business which is global?

It seems like most people on these forums are so knowledgeable about this stuff but I feel there is so much I don't understand about on-line businesses and websites.

Any answers appreciated, thanks.

A online business is still legally mostly a business that normally has to follow the laws in your country.
The regulations are also different from country to country.

JanB, in the US there are no such regulations that I know of. Frankly, I view Internet marketing as a bit like the "Wild West" of the US's history. On the other hand, it is self regulating to the extent that dishonesty will come back to you quickly. If you're buying, be careful. If you're selling, be ethical.
