Default sitting upright the entire day

this is kind of a weird problem....

does anyone else end up laying down on the floor while they are reading or studying? every single day, i end up on the floor for most of the time i am reading/studying. the obvious effects of this are that i get sleepy, my arms get tired from resting my head on them, and i just overall feel lazy and worthless.

i'm trying to shed this habit and remain seated at my desk to do all my work/reading, but my legs just get so tired. i am hoping that if i slowly keep doing it, my legs will get used to it.

anyone else have this problem lol..

Perhaps try a standing workstation?
Standing Workstation Guidelines

Can't say I share your problem. Doing stuff on the floor feels too uncomfortable to me, and I spend all my days at the computer. So my default is sitting with bad posture.

I'm gonna get myself a standing workstation some time in the future. Right now all my furniture is designed for sitting so nothing is the right height.

Some of my colleagues use these big green medicine balls - those that you find in the gym as well - and claim it forces them to sit upright when you are at the computer. I am actually fascinated by this issue as I have been readjusting my spine for a while - with great success actually. The future of computing and reading will be that it is all voice activated and you can do it standing or walking. I really look forward to that.

sorry, i guess i worded that wrong. my problem isn't with posture or my back. my problem is that my legs (strangely) get tired from sitting and force me to lay down on the floor. come to think of it, after reading how weird what i wrote just sounds, i'm wondering if this be some kind of vitamin deficiency lol...

It is good to have a break from sitting. If I remember something I read a while ago, sitting for long periods of time causes lower back pain. But I'd read more about it before trusting that!

Heh, no I can't really say I've had this problem.

Generally when I'm sitting down to work, though, I chose a sort of semi-comfortable chair (usually a hard plastic one). I think if I was too comfortable when sitting down, I'd be more tempted to slack off.

Hi!

Yeah, I think the standing workstation is the way to go. has anyone here set one up? does it cost a lot, or have people just put cardboard boxes on their normal table? :-)

Not sure about the voice activation thing though. Think its too much effort talking all day!

One thing I do, that is bad, is sit on my sofa with my laptop on my lap. Really bad for posture (end up slouched over), and for hands (no support)!

maybe there's a 30 day challenge in all this?

does anyone here have one of those cushion seats/chairs where you have your legs outstretched but it has a support for your back?

i find that studying lying down or even with music really distracts me.

i used to do really badly study wise, was failing completely at college then went about studying how to study and learn and focus and somewhere it said it was bad to study lying down so i guess i took it on as a habit

in the yogic sense you should always be in ease but that doesn't mean you shouldn't sometimes go through discomfort if it'll better you later on. on a technical level, you spine being straight allows spinal fluid and, on a more hokey hippy level, shakti or energy to flow better and you'll do better.

just wrote an article on focus, would be cool if you checked it out and commented
How to Focus: Get Things Done and Be Free

much love

that's exactly how i view it. it was very uncomfortable for me to sit at my desk the entire day the other day but i viewed it like training myself. it has become much easier already by just the 4th day.

this is extremely interesting. do you have more facts like this? i always love hearing things like this because when i know the science behind certain things, i am always more apt to do them. i will read through the link you just provided right now.

i went through my entire educational life studying on the floor. talk about inefficient. i always fell asleep and never got as much done as i could have. im glad im trying to fix this before i start graduate school.

Sitting should not fatigue your legs. You have the wrong kind of chair or the chair is adjusted incorrectly. Or you have weak core muscles and you're bracing with your legs to make up it.

can you elaborate more on this last part that i have bolded? i find that when i am sitting, i am naturally driven to slumping over at the desk. other than the health of your back, what are the benefits to keeping good posture when sitting? is there any type of neurological benefit?

did some research on the correlation between sitting up straight and its effects on breathing and blood flow. very interesting stuff.

apparently our bodies are naturally inclined to sit up straight rather than slouch over but we slouch over naturally due to habit. i wonder how difficult it will be to break this habit.
