Hey guys, I'm tackling another Media Fasting challenge! Sweet!.....or not Here are my reasons: - I've been using too much Youtube and Facebook lately - I need more time spent dancing - Too much media for me lowers my self-esteem - I need to get in touch with more people (Physically not virtually) - I need to to get in touch with myself more - I have nothing better to do - I want to face my demons instead of escaping from them - I want to continue from where I left off What are its benefits? From what I can recall, the media challenge was a gift to me. I was able to clearly hear my conscience (inner voice). I noticed this during the beginning phase of the challenge, the voice in my head became louder and louder. It overshadowed Ray Jay's song "Sexy can I" that has been set on replay in my head. I had a lot of epiphanies. I developed a deeper relationship with my parents during the time of the challenge especially with my mom. I was able to connect to people really easily. Example: I had 2-4 people open up to me to the point that they were in tears (Its a big deal to me, okay) It freed the the time I needed to think about my future. I felt more empty but I was full from it (not sure if that made sense). Basically, I learned how to be more simple. I became a more eloquent talker (base from someones comment). I was a nine (listen to pick up podcast's advance tool box Pickup Podcast). This is also when I realized that I was an AMOGer, I don't do this anymore so kudos for me. Man, I don't feel like typing more so I'll just leave it at that. From the last Media Challenge I did, I was pretty strict. I had no tv, computer (partial use only), newspaper, music (I think for like more than half-way of the challenge). I didn't even look at the advertising posters outside. I'll be less strict on this one so I'm altering my rules for this challenge. Rules: -No Youtube -No Wikipedia -No TV -No looking at Ads outside -Music is okay -No Podcasts -Limited News Paper viewing (for vital information only) -Limited time on Facebook and MSN Messenger -Check email: morning & night time only The reason why I'm allowing Facebook and MSN Messenger is because I'm a promoter. I use these media streams to promote events and other stuff. Anyways, that's all for now. I'll add more things or remove some next time. Start April 30, 2009 - End May 29, 2009 P'z -Franciz |

April 30, 2009 To pauldickinson: Its true that its impossible to not look at ads. What I meant to say was to not stare at them. In the past, the way I handled this problem was I either look at the other way or I just look past them. I didn't spend more than 3-5 seconds looking at an ad. Thanks a lot for the support guys. What I accomplished today: -Media clean for me. I didn't go outside today so I had no problems avoiding ad posters. I spent my time researching and reading about exercises and nutrition. -Franciz |

May 1, 2009 To pauldickinson: Thanks a lot for the suggestion. Okay, I had no work today so I pretty much spent my time just reading and playing with my dog (correction, my sister's dog) . I actually just got back from the park and I really had a great time there. Nevertheless, I'm media clean! P'z -Franciz |

The benefits you got from the media fasting challenge have certainly inspired me. I'd attempt the challenge myself if I wasn't already on a 30-day trial to go to bed at midnight at the latest each night. Once I finish this trial I very well might.

May 2, 2009 To Salivanth: Yeah for sure. Go try it out because its pretty cool when your ready ofcourse. I failed today. Yep, I watched TV. Well, I watched pay-per-view to be exact. Anyways, I couldn't really let it go because I've planned to watch this thing for months. But god damn it, the fight only lasted for 2 minutes! It was insane! Go Pacquiao! WOOOH -Franciz |

May 5, 2009 I failed today. I was running on the treadmill at the gym and I didn't even notice that I was watching the hockey game. I've watched it for about 3 minutes. My friend showed me a 10 minute clip from YouTube about training dogs since I got a puppy. And that’s pretty much it. P'z -Franciz |

May 6, 2009 What I accomplished: -Media clean May 7, 2009 -I was media clean until I worked out. I'll only allow myself to watch T.V. during my cardio days. Unfortunately, I have to allow this one because this time its almost impossible to avoid it especially when its right in front of me. Plus, I have no mp3 player to prevent myself from getting bored. I know it sounds like a harsh excuse but I find it difficult to keep myself staring at the wall for 20 minutes while I work my ass off. Yep. P'z -Franciz |

Franciz, good work, keep going! I cannot recommend this enough, I wouldn't say i'm media fasting but I no longer read newspapers, watch tv news or check out internet news more than once per week. I normally scan google news headlines once in the week to make sure I haven't missed that the world is about to end or something but I like MILLIONS of others was brainwashed into thinking I would become "informed", better off or more intelligent by reading news...so so wrong, I KNOW for a fact bad stuff will happen each day but reading the intimate details of how a father killed his children in outer mongolia or the banking system is about to fail serves one purpose and that is to DEPRESS me for no reason! Good trial, defo one to keep up after! |

May 10, 2009 To Apollo: Good job Apollo! And thanks for the support. I failed today. I visited my friends house and got invited for dinner. So I ate my dinner in front of the TV. I could have probably eaten my food on the dinner table but I felt it would have been disrespectul towards my friend and his family because everyone was there. I spent about 30-40 minutes watching a movie. I must say I miss it! P'z -Franciz |

Just a quick post to say that this thread, and the mention of Gym activity, has spurred me on to change what I listen to on my MP3 player when I go down the gym. I've removed all but one dance music podcast and copied Mehow's "Get The Girl Manual". I'll see just how motivated I am by Mehow later on this evening |

May 14, 2009 To philipnet: When I have my earphones, which I usually don't because I keep loosing them, I listen to a lot of hip hop. Before, I would always listen to "pickuppodcast" materials because I find the content in their podcasts really good. But usually though, I don't listen to music. I will just make my own music; I grunt a lot. CHYEA! What I accomplished: -Media clean. I was outside the whole day! P'z -Franciz |

Well, I've decided that I'm going to do that Media Fasting trial. I've already started, even though I'm already doing four other trials (Go to bed at midnight, learn C++ 30 mins a day, exercise 30 mins a day, blog once per day). It's PATHETIC how much willpower I needed to not immediately go to the lounge (couch) and turn on the TV this morning (I have 2 hours before I have to start getting ready for TAFE since the midnight trial is finally yielding 8am - 9am wakeups). I recommend everyone try just 3 days of no TV, and see how much you're dependent on it. I'm also being a lot more harsh on myself than you, Franciz: if I deliberately watch TV, or look at it in passing for more than 5-10 seconds, I've failed the trial...and must begin again on Day 1. However, I can really perceive the benefits of this trial. I probably watch 2-3 hours worth of TV per day, except on weekends where I actually watch less. That's 10-20 hours per week I'll gain, to do more productive stuff. Even video games are more productive than TV since they get your brain engaged. I hate to seem like it's a plug, but the four trials I'm currently on, plus the results of this one, will be being reported on 30 Day Trials. But yeah: no offense to you, Franciz, but I don't feel that I can get the full benefits of the trial unless I succeed completely for 30 straight days. The parameters of the trial: No watching TV (Duh) No watching TV episodes online. No watching movies on the TV. No watching movies online. I can watch a maximum of 2 movies at the cinema (This is in case my family decides on an outing to the cinema, and I don't want to ruin the family outing because of my trial. Plus, I'm not going to watch a movie in the cinema unless asked to.) This is the first actually difficult trial I've probably attempted: the most difficult thing to do before was to get off my butt at 9:30 and start doing my trials, since I had to go to sleep at midnight for one of them. Wish me luck! |

May 19, 2009 To Salivanth: Hey good luck on your challenge! Well, this is actually the second time I'm doing this challenge but I wasn't exactly fully media clean on my first challenge as well. My goal on my first media challenge and second one is just to reduce my time spent on doing pointless stuff, which was Youtubing, facebooking, and etc... For me, I don't find take watching TV to be serious issue because I haven't had cable for 9 years, so basically I haven’t had a normal life for the past 9 years. The only time I actually watch TV is when I'm over at a friend's house or when I'm on the treadmill because the TV is right in front of my face. I still have difficulties with this situation because I want to enjoy my time with my friends and at the sometime respect my decision. For example yesterday, I was at a friend’s house for 5 hours for the most part I avoided watching TV by pretending that I was asleep. But you know what, your right I should go harder on myself. I could have easily prevented that from happening by bringing a book to read. If you have any suggestions on how to avoid watching TV while over at a friend’s house feel free to throw it. Anyways, thanks for the insight and good luck with your multiple challenges. Man, I need to do a blogging challenge because I really need to improve my writing too. But I’ll do that next time. What I accomplished: -Media clean -Franciz |

If you're at a friend's house, you can talk to said friend, or instead of going to a friend's house, go out somewhere with said friend. If you're with a friend, even if you aren't media fasting it's a better idea to make honest social connections rather than watch the TV which is a barrier to genuine communication. I'd say it's easier to avoid TV when you're with people than when you're alone! And I'm doing a blogging trial as well: in fact, I'm currently undergoing five 30-day trials at once |
