I read this article over the weekend about a woman stopped by police because she was driving her car while talking on her cell phone and breast feeding her baby. At first I laughed because it just sounded so crazy but it really is indicative of the society we live in today. I found it funny because I am also reading a book called The Overflowing Brain by Torkel Klingberg and he is discussing the impact all of the technology and distractions have on our brains. Did you know we still basically have the same brain as our original ancestors, it has not really developed or evolved much more. I am a big fan of technology as it has allowed me to live a much more flexible lifestyle (I am working from Ecuador right now and will be here for a while) but at the same time it is completely overwhelming our brains, our lives and our relationships. Are we truly prepared for where technology is going to take society as we know it? Will we evolve to better handle the impacts? I guess only time will tell sometimes I am torn between loving what technology does for me and concern over the impact it has on us a as society. Thoughts???

The best way to deal with the problems associated with technology is through simple common sense. Talking too much on your cell phone while driving is a bad idea, and spending 24 hours in front of you computer screen is another bad idea. However, you can make that phone call as soon as you arrive at your destination, and you can break down your time in front of the computer into much smaller units. Applying common sense is just as important in our technological world as 100 years ago. As for whether we'll "survive"? Yes, certainly. In fact, new technology can help us survive better if we quickly learn how to adapt to the downsides. This has always been the case. |

Some people are so lost that they keep rushing everywhere but there is no purpose in that. They are like headless chickens rushing to work, rushing to go on holidays and rushing to marry and rushing to do other 'important' things. But then the whole life is just a big rush and no joy. Life should be full of happiness but it is impossible to find happiness if you always think that you will be happy at some point in the future. You will just keep reaching for that point and will never get there. People that meditate, focus on what is positive in their present and are conscious of the present moment are the most happy ones. That's what everyone should do, but most people are compteting and taking constant action out of frustration that they are not yet where they want to be. What they don't know is that they will never experience happiness if they do not appreciate where they are now. |
