Goal Setting For A Bright Future What do you think of when you imagine your future? Do you imagine yourself living in the city or the country? What type of lifestyle would you like to be leading? What type of job would make you happy? Do you want to be married or single? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself in order to set your long term goals. All of us set long term goals in our minds. We all imagine where we want to be a few years from now. We imagine the type of life that we want to lead. Few of us, however, understand how to go about achieving these dreams. Many people go through life allowing everything else to control them. Setting goals is about taking some sort of control of your life. While you cannot possibly control everything that happens in life, you can make an effort towards goal setting for a bright future. Goal setting is simply knowing what you want, when you want it and how to get to it. The first thing you need to do is to make some long term goals. Think about what will make you happy. Where you imagine yourself to be five years from now. Write these goals down on a piece of paper. After you have completed your long term goals, you need to work on short term goals. Short term goals are those steps that you will take to reach your long term goals. Even short term goals can have smaller goals needed to get to them. If you want to be a teacher, you need to decide what type of teacher you want to be. Do you want to teach Kindergarten? Junior High? High School? Once you have made a choice, or have a general idea, you need to find out what you need to do to get to that goal. One of the short term goals would be to attend college and get a teaching degree. Smaller goals would be completing individual classes towards getting through college to get your teaching degree. Even those smaller goals would have even smaller goals. Passing a class will entail studying and doing homework. Life is a series of goals. The goals can change from time to time but for many of us, the long term goals of a career that we like and a satisfying personal life, are core goals that will not change. If you want to have a bright future, sit down and really think about what you envision yourself doing five years from now and start developing short term goals to reach your long term dream. Warmly, Tom |
