Ok, I was going to ask how exactly does watching movies affect people's psychology and leaves them unfocused, unorganized and.. other things, but that has been written everywhere. What are YOUR best conclusions and insights on this, and what good articles have you found on the net, except those showing on the first 1-2 pages of Google results? And especially, what can be said about watching ONLY good movies, movies that inspire you and delight you, cause I don't care about the rest of the stuff on TV. I doubt the same affirmations can be made about watching the dumbest TV show and watching one of the best movies ever made, or a series like Star Trek that even Steve liked (and he is all about being focused and organized). Regarding the last part of your post, about watching only good movies...I think if you do it in excess, it could still be harmful. As people say, everything in moderation (even the good stuff!)

it depends. not all movies are good for you. if you watch smut, you'll end up unproductive, if you watch good movies, you'll learn something. if you watch to much, you'll end up worse off. it's all about moderation. |

There's nothing wrong with movies as a medium. Honestly, it's up to whether or not you'd rather be doing something else with your time. I wouldn't want to start watching movies obsessively to drown out my thoughts, but I don't think getting information, inspiration and entertainment out of the occasional movie (in addition to books) is a waste of my time.

Different strokes for different folks. I think your motivation should be internal - if watching movies helps fuels the fire in you then by all means watch them. On the other hand, some of the most productive people I know say watching movies is a waste of time because they'd much rather be doing it as opposed to watching it. If you find that you're more fired up as a result of watching movies then by all means watch them, do what works for you.

I believe this highly depends on the types of movies/shows one chooses to watch, what they intend to get out of the program, and how much time they choose to spend watching it. Sometimes I like to watch certain movies maybe once a week to get me into a certain mode. For instance, I like The Bourne Identity. Watching Matt Damon's role in it makes me want to work out and really get things done througout the day/week, and it works too (as long as I'm actually taking action on it). |

One of the arguments against movies is that our brains can't handle receiving moving images that are not reality. Supposedly, before TV, absolutely all moving images were real. But now, not anymore, and our brains can't make the difference between what we see in movies and what happens to us. Another is that of over stimulation. I feel this. I tend to get bored most of the times when I have to do homework, or when I want to meditate. Sometimes I desire to watch a movie more than I want to work out or take care of something I've been postponing. Especially if I want to make an important phonecall or something I'm afraid of. If I watch a movie before that, I feel like I want to watch one more. It's like I can't "get into character" - my own character, which is me. |
