Hey everyone, I know its not "true" at all, but a lot of times I get the feeling that I have the opposite issues from a lot of the people here. All self-development writing talks about how get the most of your days, effective time management, and so on. I'm a recent college grad, and now unemployed. I'm not at home with my family either, but living with some housemates in San Francisco. My issue isn't staying fit or waking up early...those things I can do without much struggle, my issue is that when I actually did wake up early, it felt nice, but then I sort of ran out of things to do by noon - 2pm ish. Waking up early isn't the problem, it's finding things to do to fill the time of these looong days. While it might sound silly, I know, it's the struggles that I'm currently going through. Does anyone go through the same thing, or has gone through the same type of issues? Again, it's not that I can't motivate myself to wake up when I want..it's the larger issue of not having enough stuff to do to fill up the days... How do you fill your days? And how does it relate to keeping yourself motivated? Thanks for your advice/input!! |

My first reaction is that you should start looking for a job. If that's not possible, spend time on something that really moves you. What's your passion? Do you have strong political views of some kind? Have you thought about starting a blog, or writing an outline for your future book? Are you interested in learning to play a musical instrument? Do you have any interesting people in your environment to talk to? If not, could you find some? |

OMG You live in San Francisco. I'm kind of employed. With the current crisis I probably won't be very soon and will have to close my business (I've spent all morning here on this forum: bad sign). But I live in a place with limited opportunities. (I can't move at the moment or I would). Read books, volunteer, improve your skills, yes write a blog, by God...do something Funny...the radio is now playing BORN IN USA... You're born in the USA....make the most of it. |

Haha. I know what you mean. Well, set new goals for exploration. Learn a new skill, learn to write or a musical instrument, spend an hour reading interesting things on wikipedia to broaden your base of knowledge. What i end up doing to fill the gaps is hanging out with friends, working on my "fun" goals (like learning instrument, having fun, goals that have nothing to do with any sort of "work but are fun or interesting or exciting), volunteer, learn about something like investing, that is, pick a niche and learn about it for a while. I also love books. I have like 12 out from the library right now and I just read voraciously. Drop by your library. If you're looking for a great book on job hunting, the best one I've got so far is What Color Is Your Parachute? You may also want to hceck out Your Money or Your Life, best personal finance guide I know of. You may also be interested in Automatic Wealth for Grads. Good book for someone in your position. Read a bunch of personal development stuff, like Brian Tracy. Pick up a good intro to philosophy or psychology book. You can find more books I've enjoyed on my blog. Get out there and have fun, like srsly have fun. Like, create memories of a life-time amount of fun. Do new stuff, organize a poker night with friends, even if you've never played poker before. Get off the subway at some random stop in your city and wander around. Check out some place you've never been before. Enter into an essay contest on a lark. Go to a local college and check out some talks. There's usually talks by professors. Go to a small theatre and check out some indie films. Make some friends. Find a hobby that you like! Personal development doesn't just have to be serious stuff, do what brings you joy. Last edited by RT Wolf; 02-10-2009 at 04:06 PM. |

You have an ideal time to start some business that you can firstly start as a hobby. Many people do not have the ability to spend much time on what they like although they would love to do that. You cannot miss this great advantage you have!

However, I believe it's important what those housemates are doing. If they all have jobs, it might be difficult for him to start a business in that environment. | |

It's not about how you can fill in your days. Your days aren't containers that you pour your life into. The illusion of boredom and excess of time comes from the fact that you wait for something to happen. You can't wait for the next significant event and you just strive to occupy yourself until it happens. STOP WAITING Ask yourself what do you want and do it right now. Nothing will turn your life around. No circumstances are better for bold action than right now. Stop waiting and reacting, start being and acting. Embrace the present moment. There is no happiness and fulfillment in the future, only here and now, if you stop waiting and create it |
