Default The Power of Concentration

Has anyone read the book "The Power of Concentration" by Theron Q Dumont?

You can download it on this website.

It is absolutely amazing. I found it years ago but never actually applied it.

Now I am.

I want to master this.

I was just reading about concentration in another book called "Our Ultimate Reality". What I wrote below is a summary of the chapter in my words. It has given me Reasons to continue with developing my complete Powers of Concentration.

Below, by Potential Truth I mean a Truth that I am still open to but skeptical of.

Now, I will continue to read The Power of Concentration with full Concentration.

------------------

Truth: Without being able to concentrate on a thought or action at hand, we are unable to achieve anything worthwhile or maintain any real progress.

Potential Truth: We can literally achieve anything with full powers of concentration.

Potential Benefits:
Inner Strength
Absolute Peace of Mind
Strong Will Power
Self Confidence
Thought Control
Consciously create Emptiness of Mind
Deeper and Effective Meditation
Easier to Lucid Dream, Astral Project, achieve an OBE
Resilient Memory
Faster and more Effective Learner
"More Control Over Daily Life"
Stronger Visualization
Better ability to Make and Carry Out Decisions
Inner Happiness
Psychic Abilities
Freedom over routines and habits

Truth: Dilution of the mind means you are diluting the effectiveness of your mind's power. Thought is energy. If you scatter your thoughts, you scatter your energy and thus lose the sharpness of single-pointed focused thought. A scattered mind, or "Monkey Mind" is like a blunt pencil piercing a sheet of paper. It is ineffective. On the other hand, a sharp pencil easily pierces the paper and creates a nice hole. Sharpen your mind by developing your complete Powers of Concentration.

Potential Truth: The Power of concentrating on a single thought is immense. For example, the Fakirs in India could plant a seed and focus their energies on sprouting the seed and creating a tree within a moments.

The Power of Concentration

Introduction (summary)

Develop the power of concentration by doing a few exercises every day.

It is incredibly valuable to be able to just focus on that which is beneficial and disregard all that which is destructive.

We are able to achieve great things if we exert concentration and effort.

We accomplish more through concentration than through physical fitness. Thus we need to train our mind if we wish to produce our life's work into a work of art. The person who is most suited to a place may not do the best job. It is the person who is able to concentrate and extend the possibilities of the circumstances for the purpose of greater service able to thus become invaluable and rewarded handsomely for it. In other words, the person who can CONCENTRATE on creating and delivering value will ultimately succeed. Sporadic creation or delivery of value results in failure.

All our thoughts and acts should have the intensity and power of concentration.

To get the full benefit of the book, any book for that matter you must read with full concentration for one page and then close the book. You then recall the ideas that you have just read. This cultivates a good mental habit. You integrate what you read much faster than if you mindlessly read it. Additionally, reading with purpose and having questions before you read further enhances concept integration.

Lesson 1: Concentration Finds the Way (summary)

We all have a higher nature and lower nature. Concentrate on the higher and the lower will wither from attention.

Our life can be moulded as we please with our complete powers of concentration. You and your will power directs your focus and creates a life of your choosing.

Habit is acquired through concentration. To be successful, we must be proactive.

Developing concentration takes individual effort. It is never enough to read a book about concentration and gain it's powers. The Law of Cause and Effect says you must exert effort in order to create a result. Effort in this case need not be strenuous, but for optimal effectiveness, it does have to be concentrated.

Develop the habit of seeing the good in everyone and everything, encouraging others and seeing their good qualities. This helps uplift you as well as in return you receive uplifting and encouraging thoughts.

Life is the medium through which we improve. At the start of every month, evaluate your growth and progress. Have your thoughts and actions created the results you expected? If not, find the root cause of the matter. Eliminate the destructive and improve the constructive aspects. Endure experiences that stretch you. The goals we set that require more than our current capacity of concentration and effort stimulates us to become stronger. The stakes and potential rewards are much higher. Targeting the low hanging fruits results in scanty benefits.

The man who becomes a success pays the price in effort. He is the one in complete immersion and concentration. He intends to do or be something, learns how to do it and then goes about in execution.

Being a hustler means you work hard on doing all that you can, not how little you can do. Learn all that you can. Society favors the progressive people. Always be improving yourself and your situation no matter what your circumstances may be. Such a person will always be in demand.

The one who leads the field is the one who is gritty, plucky and the hard worker - never the timid, uncertain, slow worker. An untried man is never put into positions of authority. Those in authoritative positions are there by their own pluck and grit. They are their because they have done something, achieved results in their line of work or proactive lead a team or company. They deserve to be there because they energize their efforts with vitality and virility.

The successful man expects only success. They see the proposition and makes sure it gets done. The person who fails attracts, expects and sees failure.

It is up to us to ultimately create our dream career, overcome our negative aspects and tendencies. Other people can support and encourage by it is by our own efforts can we achieve what we want in life. Stop dissipating your energies through distraction. Concentrate on the important.

Will power is a better life asset to invest in than money. It will at least give you a fighting chance in life's low points.

Most inventors overcome extreme odds through sheer determination and resolute courage to refine their creations. Through the hard times they emerge at the end with something valuable to share with the world.

We all want to achieve something in life. However not all of us exert enough effort to achieve it. The secret to achieving it is actually working on it today and letting no distractions take you away from it. How big we are is determined by how big we perceive our obstacles. The bigger the man, the smaller the obstacle.

Do not let setbacks hold you down. Keep persevering.

Lesson 2: The Self-Mastery - The Self-Direction Power of Concentration (summary)

If you cannot concentrate, it is likely you have an untrained mind. This can be overcome through systematic practise.

You cannot concentrate if you are in an excited state. If you are under the influence of your passions, impulses or emotions then you cannot focus your mind. Remove foods and people influences who perpetuate these states of mind. Learn to associate with those who are composed, calm, conservative and controlled.

Concentration means strength of mind. If one cannot maintain engagement with a thought or topic their mind is weak. If they cannot remove negative distractions from their attention, their mind is weak.

The mind that roams aimlessly squanders thought energy. A mind like that cannot achieve anything substantial.

If you read sensational newspaper or short stories that excite the mind and stimulate emotional impulses, they distract you and weaken your concentration.

Concentration can only be achieved with a trained mind. To concentrate on a thought means that all your faculties are immersed to consider it in its totality. In order to concentrate, you must first be aware of all your thought processes and physical movements. Then learn to control your thoughts and physical movements. Only then are you able to concentrate because concentration requires self-control of one's faculties - both mental and physical.

The person who is unable to control his thoughts, desires, feelings, actions is doomed to habit and low consciousness. The successful person is able to control his thoughts, feelings and wishes. He maintains control over his work and actions and thus himself. Consequently he can 'control' from his point of gravity.

The irritable and excitable person should be looked upon with distaste. Those with a reposeful and controlled demeanor are those with a concentrated focus. They who concentrate focus only on one thing at a time and remove all other distractions. When they are talking to someone, they maintain their focus on connecting with that person. A concentrated person is one who has their intellect and willpower acting in unison.

Consciously improve your concentration daily. In the morning, create an intention for improving your concentration. During the day at various times, make an inventory of your actions and whether you were mindful. If not, improve the next day. It is critical to improve your concentration as this increases your chances of success. Concentration entails governing and centralizing the mind for a singular purpose. Do not be in a hurry to concentrate. Be deliberate in your movements and let every physical movement be a little slower and more conscious.

Notice the body language of those who have concentrated focus and those who don't. Those who do concentrate are in control of their every move - their hand gestures, eye movements and facial expression are all controlled. Those who don't mindlessly and unconsciously scatter their movements and squander vital and nerve energy. This is undesirable. The analogy of a train with many valves opened leads to the train stopping. If the train closes all the valves except one, the train moves forward in a singular direction with focused energy.

The man who is easily irritable is not magnetic and never respected or loved. He wastes his vital and nerve stores and becomes nervous and jittery. Anger, sarcasm and excitement all weaken the man's concentration.

Each person has many cells that have vital energy. If all your cells are directed towards a singular purpose without succumbing to distractions then you will become immensely powerful.

Maintain control over your physical movements, thought processes, impulses and emotions and then your concentration abilities increase in proportion to your self-mastery over these faculties.

Work or activities that excite, emotionalize, stimulate the passions weakens the powers of concentration. Those who drink strong drinks, sing and dance, who fight, eat stimulating foods, and those who have sudden movements, weaken their concentration. Certainly those people may also have concentration but it will be spasmodic and irregular - not consistent and uniform. They will also squander their energy.

If you want to decide on something, ask yourself if it will help you grow or deteriorate and act accordingly.

If you maintain a thought successively in consistent intervals, then you are developing concentration. If you are walking, walk. If you are working, work. If you are playing, play. Focus on the task in the Now.

Hold your mind on whatever it is you are doing. Be self aware, otherwise your progress will be slow.

Practise deep and slow breathing. It aids in your concentration.

Remember the mind-body connection. Steady the body and you steady the mind. Consequently you will be able to concentrate. That is why controlled breathing is so important. Slow, relaxed, deep breathing aids in good circulation and regular pumping of the blood around the body. This creates a conductive environment for the mind to concentrate. Master also your fingers, eyes and ears - not just your mind and breathing.

Listening is more valuable than speaking. You get to learn what people say and plus it's a good exercise for your concentration.

Your handshake is an indication of your life force and intent. Magnetic people have a handshake consistent with their personality and intent.

Maintain control at all times. Speak deliberately and consciously. Think before you speak. Be mindful with your communication. If you start speaking fast, be aware and focus on your breathing to maintain poise. If you lose control, stand on your feet, lift your chest and breathe deeply.

Study a person's actions and physical movements, and you study their mind.

When you gain control of your body, you gain control over your mind.

Lesson 3: How to gain what you want through concentration (summary)

Do not merely wish. Start doing and let no distractions take you away from your purpose.

Lesson 4: Concentration, the silent force that produces results in all business

Use your intuition in dealings with people.

It is necessary to sink deep in silence to garner deep thoughts.

Lesson 5: How concentrated thought links all humanity together

Everything we do should have the approval of the intuition.

Your faculties must be focused and concentrated all the time. Control yourself at all times. You cannot concentrate one moment and then not the next moment. Whatever you are doing, you must be mindful and focused. Eating, walking and other routine activities must be controlled and focused.

Lesson 6: The Training of the Will to do

Genius is merely having a strong intent and concentrating strongly enough to overcome many obstacles. Little things done well lead the way to larger scale opportunities.

Make definite plans of improvement and then execute them.

Of course before you make plans, make sure that the plan actually leads to true progress towards your purpose.

Will power is the gathering of energy, of concentrated focus at one point.

Train your will. Make your own decisions. If you neglect this you will float around with the opinions and viewpoints of others.

Lesson 7: The Concentrated Mental Demand

Strong mental demand means that your concentrated thought actually draws what you wanted to happen to you before you prepared them to happen.

To demand something strongly is the first step to getting what you want.

Lesson 8: Concentration gives mental poise

You cannot concentrate until you have peace of mind.

"I have the power to do and be whatever I wish to do and be."

You rule thought. Thought does not rule you.

Develop enthusiasm within you.

Lesson 9: Concentration can help you overcome bad habits

Concentrate on keeping to your resolutions whether important or unimportant as it will form the habit of being resolute and concentrating on them.

No man is stronger than his habits. Because his habits either strengthen him or make him weaker.

Habits result in less risk, less fatigue and greater accuracy.

I thought learning iceskating was easy, because it keeps you busy so your brain basically has no choice but to concentrate on it.

It gets a lot worse when you got the hang of the basics though. When you try to learn the fancy moves, that's when you need to know how to concentrate by choice. And the worst is when you want to fine tune stuff you already know, then you reeally need to know how to concentrate.

Yeah, apparently Theron Dumont was William Walker Atkinson - who was one of the three initiates who co-authored the Kybalion. I just check his wikipedia profile. He has written a lot of books under many different pseudonyms...

I also have that book, bought it on amazon couple years ago, it's rather good.
But when I read it before the ideas seemed somewhat "old" to me.
I think I'll give it another try.

It's a nice book. The author has good observation and the exercises he included can really test you, if this is your thing then go for it.

I can summarize it as,

"Control your breathing, Observe the ones who are on top and emulate, think positive while moving forward."

One solid result I've gotten out of this concentration learning is one exercise on going to sleep. Sometimes I have trouble falling asleep because I have thoughts going through my mind and they keep drifting from one to another.

So to stop that I now imagine myself as a log that doesn't move and that doesn't think. This has helped me so much in getting to sleep.
