Default Need advice

Hey
I'm currently at high school and it's a very important year for me education wise.
But when it comes to studying for my exams i just don't seem to have the motivation.
The thing is, i also do a lot of exercising and i can always somehow seem to motivate myself to do my exercises.

I guess i was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to transfer some of that motivation into my exam studying.
Any help is much appreciated.

Hehe, you do know that most people here are against formal education right?

Anyway, I'm glad you're pursuing education. The problem with education or studying vs exercise is that - studying = nerd and exercise = hot body. So you are psyching yourself negatively.

Just change your way of thought and find the balance between exercise and studies. You see mind is like a muscle too, the more you use it, the more stronger it'll get.

P.s. smart people with hot bodies usually get the girl or guys. (haha my bias)

Try this book, Amazon.com: Super Memory - Super Student: How to Raise Your Grades in 30 Days: Harry Lorayne: Books

Harry Lorayne's simple and fun way in beating that dreaded dragon of an exam. :3.. it's user friendly.

Default A few suggestions!

If you have absolutely no motivation to work on something like that, consider the possibility that it's not really a motivational problem at all. It could be a self discipline problem (not having enough discipline to work on what you deem needs to absolutely be done). Or it could be a connection problem (you can't find a reason to be passionate about work that needs to be done, which would give you no motivation). It sounds like a lack of self discipline, given that you can exercise with no problem... considering exercising, to most people, is like handing them a death sentence.

The best action for you would be to do a little studying, then take a break. Currently you have no self discipline, so trying to force yourself to do hours of studying would be pointless. Five minutes of studying, five minute break. Five more minutes of studying, five minute break. When you start feeling like you should be doing more studying than breaking, bump it up to six minutes, or whatever else you can feel like you can handle. Start small, build your self discipline, then go to bigger things.

PS - I wrote a post about ways you can supercharge your productivity, but a lot of my suggestions can also double as motivational techniques. Might be worth a shot to give it a look.

Hope this helps!

Thumbs up Well

The truth is you can't look at studying as something you HAVE to do. ... It must be viewed as enjoyable. And it is! The more you know, the cooler you are. Just think of it as personal development. Everytime you read something, you become smarter. So the key is to WANT to study, not trying to find motivation for something you don't want to do.

Prove to yourself that you can do it. I don't care how, it doesn't really matter. But prove it, or you'll always wonder whether or not you could have.

Think about what you want from education and not about what's important. When you fling away other people's ideals and listen to your own voice, you'll have an easier time finding motivation.

Default From one former high school slacker to another

Nellyo,

Glad to hear people's advice is already starting to help you out. I graduated from high school in 1993 (probably around when you were born, but I digress), and I always had a terribly hard time studying. Frankly, I was bored to tears. Anyhow, that's probably part of your situation. On a deep level it's not stimulating you. I knew it wasn't because I was lazy because, like you, I would exercise, sometimes several hours a day, and I'd write and read about things I liked for hours on end.

Then I had to get serious because I couldn't live in my parents house and have crappy grades. To make a short story long, the most effective way I personally found was to make a game out of it for myself. In fact I still employ that strategy to do those unpleasant, de-motivating tasks I dread or deplore doing. For studying I'd see how many math problems I could do in an hour, design a brief history quiz for myself and see how many I'd get right, so-on-and-so-forth. In fact a few months back I was studying for my Life & Health Insurance License and employed those strategies again to great success. There's alot of things in life we don't want to do but have to. Making a game out of it, or combining it with stuff I enjoy (like listening to my Walkman/Ipod while I clean is another example) takes the drudgery out of it. Good luck and please keep us posted.

You have to want it, we can't make you do something you don't want to. Make a very very big dream, then take small steps to achieve it. ^^

The Christians do it this way

If you pretend to like something eventually you will really love it.

First concentrate on studying, and after that exercise. Always do most uninteresting things first and as a reward do things you love after that.

For every 5 minute of studying you do. ^^ give your self a mental smile as a reward.
