Default Habits that make a bad boss bad

“They say that employees don’t leave their job or company, they leave their boss,” said Wayne Hochwarter, an associate professor of management in the College of Business at Florida State University

I had a boss once that bent over backwards to keep people around. There was so much harrasment, sexual harrasment, and horrible behavior there because she wouldn't take a stand on anything.

I should have known when she offered me the job and when I said I'd take it she said, "REALLY?"

Of course, I was 19 and stupid at that time.......

I ended up leaving because of the pay, not the boss.

I experienced every single one of those poor management/leadership traits when I was in the Navy. The ship I was stationed on was a hotbed of office politics and backstabing, without even the slightest attention being given to crew morale or retention. What was worse, was that I couldn't even quit without getting an Other Than Honorable discharge, which looks almost as bad on a resume as being a convicted fellon.

This isn't the first time I have seen an article like this.

Maybe bigger companies do put a lot of thought and discrimination in who they choose for leadership positions, but it seems like many orgs do not.

I wonder why.

Is getting a leadership roll merely pay back for another position done well?

I have a lot of complaints about my current company, but this is one thing they have done right, even though it has hurt ( losing valuable people because they would not make them managagement when they wanted it, but were not suited for it )
