Yes. Probably about 100-110 WPM. I actually go faster and with less errors than when I look. Sometimes, though, I forget, especially if it's late at night. I seem to get faster on a monthly basis. Why? I learned this skill young - typing correctly. I had software bought for me that made me practice in a fun environment. What a difference it made! While other people search for keys and type only with their index fingers, I type with all 10. It's helped me immeasurably, both in school and personal life. It allows me to communicate faster online, which is where I spend much of my time (researching, reading, writing, etc.) So yes, then If you can't, I would implore everyone to research and learn how to type efficiently and effectively. |

What does "touch type" mean? Typing without having to look at the keyboard?

I type about 35 words per minute, which is fast enough for me. Have to think at the same time what I am writing

I can, but I'm self taught so I don't think I'm always using the right fingers for the outlying keys. But I do alright. I think I'm between 50 and 60 wpm.

I taught myself about 22 years ago on an old 'steam powered' (non-electric) typewriter using a moldy old 1950's era 'teach yourself to type' tutorial. I picked both up for about 10 dollars at a yard sale, and started hammering away. I never have timed myself, and have fallen out of practice, so I probably don't use optimal technique or fingering by any means. One thing that I have never understood is that why some people use the 'caps lock' instead of the 'shift' key. On my old machine, I had to jam the caps lock key down with a good deal of force to get it to work, so I never got into the habit of using it. I acutally had one 'IT specialist' ask me why I didn't use the caps lock for upper case letters when I entered my password. He says he never saw anybody not use it... |

I'm getting there. I usually have to "take aim" first, then fire away until I have to stop and think. I do hit the wrong keys a little more than I'd like to, though. I was never able to touch type on the QWERTY keyboard, but Dvorak is much easier to use. Also, that thing about Caps Lock sounds weird. People actually use that key? I got rid of it as fast as I could... Now the old Caps Lock key is my Esc, and I have placed various "dead keys", i.e. diacritics, like ā, ǫ, ŭ, š, and ç, around my keyboard. Also, my "Windows" key is the "compose key", so if I hit it, I can hit f.ex. o, then e to get œ. As well, since I'm on Ubuntu, I can get various special characters, like ð, þ, İ, and ı, by pressing Alt Gr + certain characters by default. I just love Linux. |

I had 80 WPM with 90% accuracy in my best shape. I stopped to practice now and the two last fingers of right hand are a bit numb. Left hand stayed fit thanks to my guitar
