I'm trying to find music that I can work too, that will both be positive for my mental state, and not distract me overmuch. I don't necessarily mean 'upbeat' songs - but classical music, electronica, stuff that is reasonably calm but still happy, inspiring and that put you into a state where you have clear focus. I don't mind stuff with vocals, as long as it doesn't have actual lyrics - I find that they distract me and keep my mind 'trapped' at a particular level (or I tune out the music altogether, which doesn't help). All suggestions welcomed, from any source - the hugely well-known and popular, to the incredibly obscure and independent. Thanks! |

| Elektronkind » DJ Mixes Go for DREAMSCAPE 1... Look around also for a DJ by the name of ASC and his DEEP SPACE SERIES of mixes. I would recommend starting at #1. |

For studying/reading/having in the background, to keep me alert, but doesn't distract me: Bach or similar. For getting psyched up, or doing a workout (if I walk with this in my ipod I'll just end up walking at a cardio pace then running): The band "Disturbed" especially the songs "Ten Thousand Fists", "Down With The Sickness" and "Indestructible". I DON'T listen to sad, sappy songs if I want to have energy. They put my brain into a daydreaming space. They're ok if I need to be in a space to just chill out. I listen to newer music while trying to get stuff done. I prefer not to listen to songs with too much nostalgia content if I'm trying to make things happen. I don't want to muddy up my concentration with daydreaming about the associations brought up by "oldies". | |

Great thread. Really enjoying listening to a lot of the songs suggested here. I'll add 2 that I like; the 1st I immediately thought of and the second came to me because of Apollia's list of video game music: Requiem for a Dream Wind Scene from Chrono Trigger |

If you want music that will feed the brain listen to Gregorian chant, the benedictine monks are my favorite, it has lyrics in latin but its worth it for the energy it flows through your body. also baroque music Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) 6 Concerti after Vivaldi. Concerto for Harpsichord in C Major / C minor / F Major, BWV 976 / 975 / 978. Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 Concerto for Harpsichord in F minor, BWV 1056. Concerto for Flute and Strings in G Major, BWV 1056. Suite for Orchestra No. 3, BWV 1068. --- "Air". Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) Concerti Grossi, Opus 5. --- Concerti 7, 8, 9, and 10. 12 Concerti Grossi, Opus 6. George Frederick Handel or Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) 12 Concerti Grossi, Opus 6. Concerto Grosso Nr. 1 in B flat Major, Opus 3. Music for the Royal Fireworks. -- Concerti No. 1 and 3. Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) Canon in D Major. Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) Concerto in G Major for Viola and String Orchestra. Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) 6 Flute Concerti, Opus 10. Flute Concerto Nr. 4 in G Major. The Four Seasons. -"Winter". Concerto in C Major for Mandolin, Strings, and Harpsichord. Concerto in D Major for Guitar and Strings. Concerto in D minor for Viola d'amore, Strings, and Harpsichord. Generally any music that plays at 60 beats per minute puts the mind into a relaxed state yet alert for learning and increases recall by 25%

| Glenn Gould's recording of the Goldberg Variations is a must. Missa Papae Marcelli by Palestrina There are lyrics, but it's in Latin, so I don't think it will be a problem. Die Kunst der Fuge by Bach The second movement of Sonata Opus 111 by Beethoven 2nd movement of Tempest sonata by Beethoven And anything by David Lanz. |

Australian Journal of Educational Technology, 7(2), 127-143. AJET 7(2): Dipamo and Job (1991) - a review of studies of SALT techniques Also The Einstein Factor by Win Wenger All the Baroque music that I listed are 60BPM and shown to assist in accelerated learning, relaxation and generation of alpha brainwaves to assist in creativity.

Mozart always does it for me. I'm not enough of a classical music enthusiast to actually know anything about classical music, but I've picked up a lot of classical CDs at thrift stores, and pretty much any of Mozart's concertos are great work/study music. Same goes for Handel, Vivaldi, and Haydn. Bach's Cello Suites, definitely; I have Yo-Yo Ma's versions. I also have a couple of CDs of classical guitar solos played by Julian Bream that are great for helping me relax and focus. And he's not for everyone, but I like Philip Glass a lot--the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack, the solo piano album, the Kronos Quartet's CD of his work. Oh, and speaking of the Kronos Quartet, I love their Pieces of Africa CD--it's music by African composers, played by a classical string quartet with accompaniment by African musicians. There is some singing, but it's in various African languages so I don't get hung up on the lyrics. Hmmm...Brian Eno's Music for Airports and On Land. Peter Gabriel's The Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack, which is titled Passion. That's what I've got, anyway.
