Sometimes, in periods of reading a lot of personal development or spiritual books, I have found myself thinking: Wow, what an insight, but what if I forget it? Shall I write it down on a piece of paper, make a tattoo on any part of me that I never forget looking at? What I have realized is this. A piece of wisdom can never be put in it's real form in a sentence. Words can represent the idea in order to communicate it, but never substitute it. Thus, it does not really matter if I forget the sentence or theoretical concept as have been formulated in the book. What does matter, on the other hand, is whether I have put enough energy in practising the gathered wisdom and thus making it mine. That is the only sure way of keeping the wisdom, and the only way of "doing" the wisdom. Reciting a book of ancient oriental quotes once a week will not make you wise. Putting the essence of the quotes into practise and evaluating the result with a critical mind; that is the key. If you still want a technique, however, then try this: routine. Pick one of the wisdoms you have acquired and convert it to an action or series of actions. Then make it a daily routine to making those actions, as often as possible. Perhaps you want to try out Steve's 30-day method described here, to add a time frame in case you want to evaluate the actions. Whatever you do and do not, I am totally sure that in the long run, it will make you happy. Best wishes, Peter |

Spreadsheet. I found recently how easy it is to forget a great thought, a year after you first thought it. So I made a spreadsheet that keeps track of all those thoughts. For me, it's not so important that it be well-organized; I really just want it on record. Either way, I can still look back and have repeat "ah-ha" moments on anything I forgot. |
