What's wrong with TV? Some shows are stimulating and exciting. Even funny!

Coffee, bad in excess, can be delicious in small doses, again, what's wrong with that?

Alcohol? The great social facilitator! Nothing wrong with a pint in the evening's if you ask me!

So...well done for depriving yourself of enjoyable things. I don't envy you.

@Akashic Librarian: lol, they are bad. TV isn't useless per se but if the only things you watch are soaps and news - and that too for 5 hrs a day then it's useless...

Ofcourse they are not bad, it's how we use them.
The problem is, they are highly addictive and the line between proper use and abuse is often blurred.

Good on ya Stephen! Requires some solid discipline to get rid of these things.

I am glad to hear your happy.

But I have to ask why? Are you happy because not having these things brings you pleasure? Or are you happy because of what you think it makes you to not have these things in your life?

I don't mean this in a hostile way. And please answer honestly. I won't think less of you either way.

All three of the items he's mentioned are not just very addictive , but they are considered by many to be just toxic. True, anything in moderation is good, and these qualities probably applies to meat, cocaine, gambling, one-night-stands and many other things too - but my take on it is that it's up to the individual to decide how they perceive those things and whether he/she wants the pros.. and cons of having any of those elements in their life.

Akashic librarian, you said "nothing wrong" with any of those three.
Well, I kinda am on the same page as Stephen on opinions of those.

TV can be a major influence on the thinking of many, not to mention a massive black hole for our time. But I do watch one or two sitcoms once a week, at a time when I want to take a break from my more constructive pursuits.

Coffee contains in my opinion: the worlds' best legalised drug - caffeiene - I love what it can do for me when I'm sleepy, or suffering from allergies, and need to study - especially if it's through the night. However it's still an external stimulant, and can produce severe lack of productivity and other effects during an outage or withdrawl. Also it is said that it takes 48 hours for your body to completely filter out a cup of joe.

"Alcohol makes fools out of the wisest of men" - the bhagvat gita. And this is something I learnt through experience (and not good experiences at that).

Yes, on all three counts I'm guilty of swinging all the way to the other end of the spectrum by abusing (or rather getting abused) by those three. And maybe instead of balancing the amount of those three elements in my life, I'd choose to believe that the best balance in my life can be achieved by a complete removal of those elements - then why not? Their effects aren't so great that they will be missed.

I feel in control of my life

I am happy to identify these things as poor choices for people

TV doesn't make people happy. It makes them inactive, which reduces happiness.

I think that letting go of things that aren't working well for you in living a life you love is one of the most powerful things we can do to make room for the generation of things that DO work well. So congratulations!

Also, judging something is a great way to keep it stuck to you. It looks to me like Stephen noticed a few things that weren't working well, and chose to let go of them without putting lots of energy into resisting and making them wrong. That's what it looks like to me, anyway.

Congrats ! I am so impressed!

Of all those, I think TV is the hardest thing to get rid of totally. I can't even go out to eat at a restaurant without there being TVs on every wall.

obviously if he's pleased to have gotten rid of these things then he doesn't feel deprived.

I certainly don't feel deprived when I pass up on stimulants like coffee or alcohol. Alcohol a great social facilitator? by custom, not by requirement. I've never had a person actually care that I am drinking a glass of water, once they realize that I'm more open and engaging than the majority of the people who have had a few pints in 'em

TV? I doubt many avid TV viewers would consider their time spent as productive, overall. People can say there's some good programming, but I always found it a slow & inconsistent medium. I won't deny that some is fine, but I wouldn't pay $60/month to sift through a dumpster hoping to find a quarter.

Felt compelled to respond here, as these are 3 habits that I find add nothing to my life as well. I drink coffee/alcohol on occassion, but it's increasingly rare

TV has its merits, but I only watch the shows I like, which are very few in number. Coffee, to me, is great and I would never give it up. Alcohol isn't something I usually drink, so no problem there. But if you feel that not having these things in your life makes your life better, keep doing it. I could really use a latte right now.

Congratulations Stephen:

You’re truly are the captain of your life when you have your hands on the controls. I understand what you’re talking about.

What led me into self-improvement was a realization that I didn’t have much control of anything in my life. Inklings would pop into my brain, causing it to race off like a wild horse on some crazy notion that wasn’t based on reality, but on some distortion of it that existed only in my head. This was causing me to make incorrect assumptions and bad choices that took my life in directions I didn’t like.

One day I realized that although I was physically living in reality, a part of my brain was living in a world of false ideas and conclusions, and it was running the show, not me.
For me, gaining some control meant removing myself from things that were distorting my sense of reality, and the correct functioning of my brain. I realize now that the brain is a very sensitive instrument, and it can be adversely affected by such things as alcohol and caffeine.

I’m not as far along as you yet, but I’ll eventually make it.

Thanks for sharing your great success!

What's wrong with TV?? There's good TV and there's bad TV, you just need to filter it properly.

What's wrong with coffee (in moderate doses)?? Some coffee when you're feeling tired is priceless.

Alcohol, i do agree, it's damaging to health even in small doses.

I haven't watched TV in my home for probably 6 years now. We just don't have a TV. TV gives you the attention span of a gnat my old maths teacher used to say. Youtube is now my substitute

I agree with the above. Coffee is a toxin.

And I don't consume alcohol much now. I don't like it very much anyway. If you want to loosen up socially, you can do it without stimulants.

If those three were difficult to give up then the value of doing so was in building up enough self-discipline to do so. That's more than enough.

In my first year at uni I didn't have a TV, I don't drink tea or coffee as I generally don't like hot drinks (although, yes, I have tried tea and coffee once or twice in my life) and I drank alcohol on rare occasions (I don't really enjoy clubbing). Up until uni I never drank alcohol anyway.

I've gone without the latter two pretty much since birth and giving up TV when I went to uni was actually really painless. This year I have TV but the signal is so bad with the aerial that watching it is all but useless. So for the second year running I'm missing all my favourite shows.

Fascinatingly, I haven't experienced a decline in happiness though. And it's not as if I've filled the void with gaming or what have you.

Well, what's wrong with alcohol, you just have to moderate it properly....????

By filtering TV you have to separate the dross from the diamonds which are few and far between. In separating the dross you have to watch it to know it's dross and therefore turn off. In doing so you are wasting time. Or you could just take somebody else's word for it like a TV magazine or a critical review and............................................... ...........Voilla! Your back to where you began.....no control.
