I think the biggest trick is getting comfortable outside your home. Even I don't want to socialize when I'm stressed out.

And when in doubt, just dress and act normal! If you're a girl, then just go with the flow of conversation. If you're a guy then try to direct the flow. In my experience, guys who are with new people and don't direct the flow tend to get ignored.

Don't worry about your social skills. I mean what use are social skills if you're alone all the time?

Trust me, you need to get out your house and do something. Volunteer in a charity shop or join a club. Then once you get used to interacting with people your social skills will improve and any social anxiety will fade away.

Social skills are like exercise. Reading about it will help, but will not bring impressive results. T

The best thing to do is to just socialize and keep alert to people's reactions.

Take your lumps, learn your lessons, and move on. Keep getting out of the house and being with people.

I agree with the other posters, there's really no other way to improve your social skills than to simply get out and be social. I also have this problem as a student that doesn't work in my spare time, I'm either studying or doing something in my room. Working from home is certainly a luxury that most people want, but it still has its pitfalls. Staying at home all day is one of them. Find an area you're interested in or get interested in something if for no other reason than to get out. Hopefully you'll find something productive and fulfilling that will get you started.

I would like to know what kinds of things people here like to do outside the house, just to get some ideas flowing. What do you like to do?

Take classes at Learning Annex. Go to art galleries and sign their guest book so that you get invites to art exhibit openings. Do volunteer work. Join Toastmasters.

While doing these things, become sincerely interested in other people. You'll just flow once you've done this. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.........

The thing is, I have no car, cant drive and have no money.

lol

I guess the first step is learning to drive and getting some income. I know this, but I can't seem to push myself to drive...... so hard

I don't have a driver's license. I walk, and I take the bus. This is easy in Seattle, but it might be harder in other places.

I also get rides from people. The fact that it's illegal for me to drive takes a little explanation, sometimes, but more often it makes for a self-deprecating story. People are remarkably willing to give you a ride if you're not a horrible, nasty person.

Shower, shave, look decent, and enjoy yourself when you talk to people. Social skills are developed solely through practice. You can have tons of book knowledge about social skills, but you won't have the instincts for a sufficiently fast reaction until you actually use them. And you'll have a hard time understanding the book knowledge until you've seen for yourself how it applies.
