Default Collage! help.. not sure what to do! :(

Ok first thing you need to know is Collage in the uk is a differnt thing to in the US. Its free and you go when your 16.

Ok. I started a music Tech course and have been doing it for a week now. I do like what i learn in most of the lessons thats why I picked it. to inprove my production skils for my own music.
But yeah I realy dont like te atmosfear in it. The people are nice but none of them are like.. none of them i could see myself being great friends with, there just not my kind of people. I find myself being alone at the many long breaks we get, and there at differnt times to most of peoples courses that my friends are in so i cant see anyone. yeah some of the lessons in it can be quite boreing like there almost like an IT lesson :L
And aspeshily with all my friends doing a music practise course it makes it worse when im being shown about how computers work and how they process audio when my friends are like next door and i can hear them playing music and im like ahh! i want to be. yeah. I love playing music with other people and recording but i dont like the ammount of live shows you are required to play in it. So yeah thats why that course isnt right for me. but the thing is both of those courses im not really doing for the deploma to get a job im doing it to directly inproov my skills in areas of things I love and have fun doing it.
so yeah... the next thing would be to do an art course. my girlfriend is doing art aswell and even if i didnt get put in the exact class as her it would be good as i think i would probably have more breaks in commen with her and get to see her more. So yeah.. as there arent any courses that are good that i can get a degree in that i will find usefull i might as well just do somthing that i would enjoy.. like art. theres not much to learn in an art course but it would be good to do art all day... yeah.. im still not sure what to do. As i know i could just keep doing the course im doing now and be unhappy for the next two years but then have a degree in somthing useful to me. Im not sure what i could do in a career with an art deploma.. I want my career to involve art and music so it would be ok but yeah.. i cant see myself getting into a univerity from me doing art well i might but what if i dont?
Yeah..

Well I had the same feeling when I studied the basics of classical guitar when I was a kid.

Later I met people from the Modplug community and I loved to make music.

They taught me about expressing what is in my soul through music.
Arts is about joy and expression or you will not make good arts.
No wonder why you have problems to make arts... there is no joy, so you can-t use it to express your inner feelings.

Youre 16 - I find that is very young to be trying to build valuable job skills or to decid what to do in the future.

I went to college when I was 17. I took classes in Liberal Arts.

Do NOT take classes because you want to be with your friends and DO NOT take classes because you want to see your girlfriend more.

Now that you are at a new phase in your academic life you need to be YOUR OWN PERSON. So do something you enjoy and do as many different things as you can.

It's a big world out there - and when you will get a job, even a small one or a part time job or go on to University - you will be ALONE at the start of everything. You have to jump in to NEW things - like meeting different people, giving new things a chance.

IT classes, if they don't interest you, you are in denial of what it takes to be a digital music producer. Some mandatory classes, however, can be very boring. But I think there are boring classes in every program...Just because they are boring, doesnt mean you can't LEARN something in them.

If you don't like live performance...Then don't become a musician. You can do it for fun- believe me there are thousands of excellent musicians that are working very hard and that want to perform - and that doesn't have to be you. Play music for yourself and take what you like from your classes - leave the rest. And figure out how to make it work for you.

There is more than one way of doing things right on the way to learning about your future career. I suggest you do as many different things as possible, experiment, and get used to being ALONE. When you really like what you do, it doesn't matter to you where your friends are or if you will make friends or that things are new and different and weird. And if you are well with YOURSELF and YOUR choices, and you HAVE FUN and learn and feel great about it, then you will make the best friends ever - people like you who are their own people - and who really LOVE what they do!

Good Luck!

(I made friends after a few weeks in College and now im in 3rd year at one the top Canadian Universities - I left all my friends behind to reach for a really cool, hard-to-get into program in Toronto - and I am having the best time . I am slowly meeting people - Of course I miss my friends at home - they are 6 hours away - but I am my own person and I know I will make friends in my program really soon. )

I dont like the prejudice to that model though thats assumeing so much and the worst thing about it is its asuming I will do things i really dont want to do and wont be happy with. Im not going to get a crappy job that i can't spend time with people i love becuase. That would just be wrong for me. Im looking for a balance a "win win situation" as steve would call it when i can be on a good academic path but also be with the people i love.
