I am a 22 year old IT consultant with considerable experience in computer networking. I've been told by many of my peers that my technical experience is top notch. I feel like I am great when it comes to person to person interaction (no "geek" and "parents' basement" sterotypes here), but I often find that I'm not treated as an equal when working with those who don't know me as well. I am constantly aware that most of my peers are at least ten years older than I am, and I think that I am inhibiting my own growth and limiting my own value by thinking of myself as different (somehow not as good) since I am 22. What things can I do/change to get past this self-induced barrier? Any feedback is appreciated!

Seems like a limiting belief. You just said everything you need. Your experience is top notch has has respect of people a decade your senior. Age isn't your enemy here it is your Ally! Turn your new belief into your self fulfilling prophecy! Also, looking into NLP techniques about belief patterns, I'm sure Steve has something written about them somewhere.

We could spend our time reframing your belief to "Well I have fresher and more innovative ideas," and "I am more dedicated and determined in my craft," but instead, just realize that age doesn't matter. It's knowledge, and it's experience. We don't need a false reframe. All we need here is truth. Age doesn't matter. Does the computer care how old you are? No. Neither do the people you help through IT. |

Hi bfair, Like it or not, people will be thrown off by your age, however, if you don't let it affect you, they'll forget about it very soon. Just ignore their reactions and don't acknowledge any reference to age comments. Continue with your presentation or consultation and then they'll move on quickly too. The worst thing you can do is let it break your momentum. Your expertise speaks for itself. |

I agree that age doesn't matter when it comes to I.T. Computers respond to skills not age, and so should people. There will always be someone to find what your insecurity is, and use it against you Achievements and skills are not age-related. Just go you merry way and do not let others dictate the quality of your experience of life. |
