This is awesome Shivraj! You are an inspiration!

Do whatever motivates you, but be a bit gentle with yourself...

BIG GOAL: To eat an elephant.

How: One bite at a time ( Not whole elephant at a time)

My theory is : Pickup a small subset of habits. Daily achieve those. Celebrate those. And cement those. Then move to next set of new habits. And make sure you are still achieving previous habits.

My Inspiration is Steve Pavlina !

Quote:
3) Also in 1997, I decided I wanted to exercise every single day for a year. That was my 1997 New Year’s resolution. My criteria was that I would exercise aerobically at least 25 minutes every day, and I wouldn’t count Tae Kwon Do classes which I was taking 2-3 days per week. Coupled with my dietary changes, I wanted to push my fitness to a new level. I didn’t want to miss a single day, not even for sick days. But thinking about exercising 365 days in a row was daunting, so I mentally began with a 30-day trial. That wasn’t so bad. After a while every day that passed set a new record: 8 days in a row… 10 days… 15 days…. It became harder to quit. After 30 days in a row, how could I not do 31 and set a new personal record? And can you imagine giving up after 250 days? No way. After the initial month to establish the habit, the rest of the year took care of itself. I remember going to a seminar that year and getting home well after midnight. I had a cold and was really tired, yet I still went out running at 2am in the rain. Some people might call that foolish, but I was so determined to reach my goal that I wasn’t going to let fatigue or illness stop me. I succeeded and kept it up for the whole year without ever missing a day. In fact, I kept going for a few more weeks into 1998 before I finally opted to stop, which was a tough decision. I wanted to do this for one year, knowing it would become a powerful reference experience, and it certainly became such.
From 30 Days to Success

What a commitment!

I respect your effort and your challenge. I advise you to take a good rest as far as possible tough. I found by personal experience that it is not easy to keep a tigh schedulle of exercice and specially study without enough rest. If you sleep less hours you gain in time, but you can't use that time so effectivly (especially on studying new or difficult material) as you can we you have a good night sleep. Also your attention during the day is much less and you can lose good opportunities in your life or even put your life in danger (don't drive if you are sleepy!)
Well, said that I wish you success in your pursuits and good results on your plan. Go on!

Thumbs up True

Yes, that's so true.. I had same experience in the beginning of the challenge. I found difficult to adjust my sleeping patterns. After little experimentation, I learned that 5 hour excellent quality sleep during night and 15 to 20 min. nap during a day is sufficient. Also I never push myself to the limit during exercise. I do what I can do without stretching myself too much. Also there is one side effect of Pranayama(breathing exercises in yoga) that you need less sleep, body recovers easily and fastly. whenever I feel some stress or fatigue, on that day I go to sleep early..

Thanks friend, really appreciate your concern.

Default Never give up!

As for me I need at least 6-7 hours sleep per night but I can stretch it to 5 hours for a period of about 2 days, then I start feeling the pressure during the day. As I try to get a good balance of physhical exercise and mental study I think that is an important concerne. The ideal though would be 8 hours sleep per night. I feel the pressure specially on the difficult I sent to concentrate (reading, creative thinking, etc) not so much on the physical side. I found though that physical fatigue much interfer with your emotional performance. So I found out that I tend to be more negative and frustated toward life when I am tired and unrested.
I know physical exercice reduces substancially the necessity of sleep. I agree with that by personal experience, but as I can see you like yoga keep in mind the word of Budha: " Everything must be balanced in life". If you want to produce nice harmonious music the strings of the playing instrument must be tuned. Not too loose, not too streched. That's the philosophy I try to follow on my everyday life.
On the other side, we must sometimes push our limits or we will not develop. On my personal experience I know that is true on physical exercise. If I don't push a little everyday I keep always the same rythm.
I think the secret is to find your own balance. Since it is different for everybody it is difficult to find a general rule and that's why so many fail to find it. I think the key is to find it within yourself!

Keep going, never give up! Good luck!

I decided to go as fast as can go without crossing the limits of my performance. Sooner or later I will hit the wall but till then progress is much faster than I had thought off. When ever I'll hit the wall then I'll use strategy of "Progressive adaptation".. that's the genius of body. That's how people have conquered Mt.Everest, Michael Phelps have won 8 gold medals, Memory champions use this idea to improve their memory.
In this strategy you stretch just beyond your comfort zone without crossing your real performance limits. For example. In running it's called 10 PERCENT RULE.. "You never increase your mileage and pace more than 10% than previous week" Increase of mileage and pace more than 10% spells ENJURY.
But nowadays It's comfortable and enjoyable for me to almost increase mileage by 40 to 60 % daily ! I will go as far as I can go without enjury. That's my first priority.

For the philosophical point of view, I follow Buddha's saying.. "Follow your own path, Be your own lamp, Do not believe just because you have said to believe." Learning and growing is one of my value. I learn, experiments with what experts have said and I do what's right for me to do.

One big reason for this challenge is that I want to give myself a gift on my b'day.. It's in the next month.

Thank you munish,

Yes, I am working on purpose of life too.

I believe our purpose of life changes with the understanding we get time to time. For some person purpose of life to make money and software
e.g. Bill Gates.. has now changed to Philanthropy and greater good to mankind.
Life, world changes and so do purpose..

My purpose of life Version 1.0 (with today's understanding) is,

"Explore, Learn to use my unique talents and using those talents become world no.1 in the domain of those talents."

'' My affirmation for that is.. God and I are the most invincible army in the universe, we will conquer whatever we want. ''

Lightbulb Great Work!

Wow! ShivRaj, you are an inspiration. I've been a lurker for quite sometime on these forums... always soaking in the posts, reading, feeling charged & driven temporarily (probably whenever i could relate to the posts) but nothing concrete, no improvement would ever come off it because i seldom took action.

I had posted once in Feb'08 about my issues, but despite really good feedback from quite a few people, i've still not made much progress (nothing tangible anyway). Then i set & posted goals for July & failed! Instead of getting on with it (by implementing punitive measures or using an alternative strategy to put things behind me)... i chose to punish myself by losing faith in myself... that's why i stopped posting altogether (i hate listing out my issues, have others try help me out, and then not being able to improve well enough... feel terribly guilty, almost tormented ...i feel like i'm letting others down, letting myself down... feel so dishonest).
Your post was a shot in the arm, now i'm simply gonna set goals in terms of targets/objectives & set up some punitive measures in case i'm not able to meet them (nothing as dramatic as shaving my head, but certainly something unpleasant)... at least this way, i'll not feel dishonest, because i'll dutifully carry out the punitive measures in case i screw up.
I know that this surely seems quite a negative methodology to subscribe to but i feel this is what i really need right now (the old carrot/stick model)
Consequences for every action... compliance/non-compliance entirely upto me.

Thanks a ton, Shivraj. All the best for your Goals!

I believe, carrot and stick model can get you started but for long term motivations it's useless, sooner or later suppressed feelings rebels.
IMHO what works for me is setting incremental goals that gives feeling of improvements also daily visualization of final outcome is a great motivator.

There were very strong urges for me to leave the challange inbetween but I wanted to give gift of self discipline, health, improved knowledge to myself on my birthday, which is on 30th september. so I persisted. Challege was really tough ..
