Muslims memorize the Quran in arabic all the time. I've not done it, but seen it done and been in that environment. Basically you read a particular verse/surah, then you repeat it in your mind and get tested on it by someone who's reading what you recite. Once you get it good, you move onto the next one. If you want to know how it's done, it's constant repetition and small chunking. |

Before you do that it might be of help to know that Jesus was quoted as saying God didnt go in for his people doing things parrot fashion and I believe he was being very serious although I suspect Peter, James and John and their friends all had a good laugh about it. They werent very good at remembering what Jesus said most days and it would seem he didnt hold that against them. It would be a shame if you were busy remembering it all and then got to that bit...which is quite a way in and finally realised you had been wasting your time. Just thought I might save you some trouble.Did you ever hear Jesus telling any of them to do that? Was Jesus wise?Or perhaps you think he forgot such an important instruction before he ascended and you have decided to fill in the blanks for him?

it is possible, some of my friends have memorised the quran. one of them since he was 11, other 14, other 17.. another one was...13/14. basically the quran is made in such a way that it is sort of rythmic and it just sticks in your head somehow. just keep reciting until you can recite it by heart, then all you gotta do is maintain that.. try it if you dont believe me. it is very simple.i know another kid who learned it recently , he is 12. all these people are local, and its pretty amazing that people like this exist... |

I think it is possible. Learn Loci systems. Create palace and journeys. Review. It would be interested to investigate all actor techniques (theatre and stand ups).

Wow impressive. I have not seen anyone memorizing the whole bible. I am not even sure if I am able to tell if someone is already doing it. The closest I have seen is someone who can preach without looking at the notes and just flowed with the bible verses without error. The audience were looking at the bible, he did not. We were amazed because the verses that came out from his mouth are exactly the same printed on the pages of the bible. Amazing! |

Kids in Sunday school memorize a Psalm or the Sermon on the Mount and I've heard Catholics speaking prayers from memory and Lutherans and Catholics speaking back to the priest in church from memory. Of course it's possible but I'm with the others. Why? People who don't believe in the Bible aren't going to care if you can cite chapter and verse and those who believe and want to know can look up what you say by keyword anyway. If it's for penance or to seem more pious, just don't. You know what Jesus said about those who make broad their phylacteries. Get an electronic Franklin Bible and keep it in your shirt pocket if quick access is what you're looking for. |

XXX It is, just use this method. Personal Developent For Busy People - P D F B P. <-- you recall the information when you read the letters till you memorize it. Memorize 5 lines or 7 per day review via first letter of the word method for things you already know. In 3-5 years you'll have it memorized. Just because it may seem almost impossible it doesn't mean it is. There is a method ^,^ stacking and first word recall techniques for verbatim memorization. If you plan to memorize not verbatim it'd be easier. (Mind mapping / Outlining) will summarize the bible in a single page or two. ^^, Good luck.

It was said that you could open the bible, old or new testiment, and say the first five or six words of any verse you care to pick, and he would finish the verse, and then proceed to finish the rest of that chapter or book, whichever you prefer, from his memory alone. It was said by many that he memorized the entire KJ version of the bible and other scriptures accepted in that church. I've never seen him do this myself (he is dead now), but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true, as he was probably smarter than anyone on earth when it came to anything in LDS theology or anyone else's theology for that matter. It is very very possible. But it'll take years though. It'll be easier if it's not word for word but if word for word, chunking is your method. ^^ Good luck, this is also a good exercise guys.

Memorizing the Bible has many benefits and rewards. I know of some people who have memorized the entire Bible word-for-word. Right now, I am using the same method as others have and so far, I almost have 15 books of the Bible memorized word-for-word. My goal is to memorize all 66 books word-for-word. My reasons are to get to know God better, stay away from temptation, understand more of His Word (the verses that aren't as common helps give me a better understanding when I memorize those as well as the common ones), comfort for times of hardship, guidance on how to deal with situations, being able to assist someone if they know what a Scripture says but can't remember where it's found and then when they tell me the gist of what it says I can then say, oh that's found in this book, chapter and verse, reach out to others if they are searching, and so forth. As it is written, "I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You." Psalm 119:11 How better to hide God's Word in our hearts than memorizing. Plus, Jesus knew God's Word by heart. That was how He was able preach to and teach the people, and to counter Satan's temptations by quoting from different verses like in Deuteronomy, instead of saying "Satan, wait until I can look it up" or "Satan is using Scripture (the verse about angels), so he must be right." The Apostles also knew Scripture, that was how they were able to preach to and teach the people. Memorizing God's Word is not the only discipline or act of obedience, but is one of the most rewarding and useful. For example, if someone in the Church has a problem with anger and then they memorize something like Proverbs 29:11 which says: "A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control." Then memorizing should give such a person conviction to do better on their Christian walk. I know there have been some verses that really convicted me to do better. One that really convicted me was 1 John 4:18 which says: "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love". That one verse really convicted me when I first memorized it. And it was a verse I never knew was in there until I memorized 1 John. Everyone in the entire world will find at least one verse that will convict them to do better if they are open and allow their conscience to convict them. I know memorizing the entire Bible is possible for most people. When people say they have a bad memory, usually it is not so much that their memory is bad, it is often that their memory is untrained. Once they find ways to train their memory, their memory improves. Now someone with Alzheimer's or related dementia disorders or some other disorder affecting memory and someone with a significant delay won't be able to memorize or at least would have a much more difficult time, but for people in general, they memorize things all the time without being aware of it. Like memorizing someone's name, addresss or phone number, or items of food they need to buy at the grocery store and so on. So memorizing the Bible will take many years but it's worth it (I found it is more rewarding than most other things I have experienced in life) and possible for many if they want to. |

I do recall my father (a protestant priest) telling me about a missionary who had been able to converse with someone who was a foreigner (probably African - I don't recall) who knew no English because both of them knew their Bible so well in their respective languages that they were able to point to verses to convey what they were trying to say. (I guess they were able to compare their Bibles and know which verse was which in each language). No idea if its really true or ecclesiastical legend. |

In case anyone still reads this thread via a google search (like I did), I made a website to help with memorizing the Bible (and plan to add other texts shortly). Basically it quizzes you and repeats parts you get wrong...the idea is that it can be used in conjunction with methods suggested above (like the first letter method). http://www.jacksonlearning.com |
