Unhappy marks going down..help

Hi
This semester has being hard for me, Im always struggling with the marks I get, I wont tell you ditails, its worthless, but the essential thing is that I have never being someone that when studies hard it wont get good result, the thing is that Im almost leaving all behind in order to get better marks at college and not to repeat any class.

but this semester even if I study harder, and more Im getting worst and worst results, my family, my friends and specially me are overwelmed, Im feeling very depressed, I fell almost stupid seeing my friend studying the same or less than me and getting a lot better results, I cant stop having feeling of quit college for a year or something, because I can have no life and still doing bad on college , so what is the point, my life now is discouraging and pointless, everything that I wanted to do and started doing (going to gym every day, work in an mlm bussiness, play more tennis, be more with my friends, etc..) I just have to leaved it in order to study and im in a worst possition, im feeling hopeless..

More information would have been useful, but I'll try to give you a general reply that might help. What is it that you can't do? I know, I know, there's lots of things -- pick the main one or two. Personally, I make stupid mistakes with numbers (especially on tests) and I make sweeping statements that are sometimes wrong because I generalise too far. In the actual learning, I know that I must be able to answer questions blind (ie, no notes, nothing) or explain the stuff in detail to someone. For you, you might have to be able to draw a tree diagram, or you might have to be able to understand the equations, or the important of various things or I can't think of any other examples right now that aren't too specific I'm sorry my brain is fried from studying. *gasp*

How are you learning? Via lectures, via reading, via listening, via physical classes interacting with other people (tutorials), via putting the theory in practise (labs) or some other way? Does that way work for you? Try to remember something you learnt well and, if not easily, then with not too much trouble. How did you learn it? Chances are, the way you learnt that stuff is your preferred (or one of your preferred) method of learning. I learn best from face-to-face learning/arguing/interaction/teaching, followed by listening and reading combined, followed by concept-then-examples, followed by other ways. If you search it up I'm sure you can find learning styles on the internet. Try to figure out your best way. I'm linguistic, first verbally then visually (that's why for me interaction works, then listening combined with reading). Luckily for me, linguistic learning is the most commonly used, but you may not learn that way. If you don't, you'll have to find a way to convert your lessons into your style of learning, eg, diagrams/pictures.

You may also be bored senseless. It is a distinct possibility, so don't dismiss it. I have been in the past (and still am in some compulsory subjects, although I try to choose my other subjects so that I like them).

Also, try to combine the things you want to do with your study. You can listen to lectures/audiobooks etc on an mp2 player at the gym or possibly even while playing tennis (never tried so I'm not sure). Are your friends studying the same thing as you? (If you don't have any friends studying the same course, that might be a reason why you're struggling. Put the effort in and make some aquaintances if nothing else.) I know what you intended by the statement of seeing your friends was seeing them not for study, but if that's all you can manage then don't sneer at it! Arrange a study group of your friends and get together to discuss the subject and questions and concepts etc. Make sure you actually spend at least 50% of the time doing the study related stuff and not just talking. (Guilty.)

Sorry, don't know what an mlm business is so I can't suggest anything there. Is there a way you can relate your study to it? I dunno, can you use what you're learning in any way? So, someone studying accounting would work in accounting or whatever. (Honestly no idea, and not enough time to go seaching. Must get back to my own study soon!)

Also, you sound quite close to being depressed. Maybe go see a doctor? You could simply have a chemical imbalance that's treating you roughly. Are there any major problems with your family, or your life in other areas? Not asking for you to answer that here, but think about it. 'Major' doesn't have to mean important in the grand scheme of things, it just has to be important to you.

Okay, that's probably enough for you to get started with. Don't just read this, say, 'yeah, she has no idea what she's talking about' and just forget it. Even if I do have no idea what I'm saying, having a look at my suggestions might trigger you to have a different idea which might work for you. I just know that I've been where you seem to be, in several different forms (depression, boredom, can't seem to learn it -- god it's frustrating) and sometimes you just need to try different things until you find what's up this time.

Good luck! It's worth figuring it out, if only because it'll make you feel better about yourself.

Do you really want to be in college? Because I'm getting the distinct feeling that you don't want to be. it seems you want to do everything but study, and when you do study you're not really putting much into it, so that you are really sabotaging your efforts.

dont' get defensive, but think whether you really want to be where you are at?

What's important in your life? What are your long-term goals? You have a lot of things you want to do right now, but are they really going to help you toward your goals?

Cut out all the unnecessary stuff for a while, and discipline yourself to study as much as you need to.

Quitting college for a year isn't going to solve anything. You will still have the same conflict when you went back to it in a year. You have to figure out what is really important in your life, and dedicate all of your resources toward that.

By the way, why are you in an MLM business? Are you sure it is legit?

Thumbs up

Hi mati,

Very simple - 2 things.

1 - remove all your limiting beliefs that you are lousy in studies.

I was ranked at the bottom in my class and I still managed to get the highest mark in my class when I was in University.

Need to understand that the way you think about your ability greatly determines your outcome.

2 - Study harder does not guarantee good results, if not better.

If you don't know, top students study in a certain way that help them to remember well - using their brain.

Try to find some books on top students and I think 'mind mapping' and 'speed reading' will help.

Achieving your goal is simply a matter of strategies.

If you are not getting the result that you desire, it is not because you are stupid. It is because you have not found the right strategy yet.

I have faith in you man!

If you've done some soul-searching, and you know that college is what you want to be doing now, or need to be doing to reach your goal...

I took a class based on the videos (now DVDs!) Where There's a Will, There's an A. I was a good student before, but I learned SO much about how to study effectively, and how to really hear what a teacher wanted. It helped my (short) college career immensely.

You can also go to your professors, and go over your tests and papers -- most really do want their students to succeed!

I dont look for a solution I think its not out here, its more inside me, but I feel hopeless, maybe this sound like there is more things worst to worry about, but this messes my hole life, its almost my main objective in my life now and the more effort I put on the worst the result are.

Hey mati.

I don't see it in your posts anywhere, but have you asked anyone for help? Have you talked to any of your professors about this? Joined any study groups? Asked for some tutoring from people that are doing well in those subjects?

Btw... What subjects are you struggling with? Are there any that are easy for you? Have you discussed this with your councilor? Colleges offer a ton of help for these kinds of situations. Have you actually used any of it?
