Default The Journal

Has anyone tried out this software? The Journal v4.1 - Journal Software / Diary Software - Free Trial - Download Now!

Its been recommended by Steve Pavlina. I've been using it for several weeks now and I absolutely love it. I'm going to buy it as soon as I can afford it.

I LOVE this program. It's one of my very favorite applications ever. I wish it were compatible with Mac without having to do that whole Parallels thing.

Steve, can you intervene with the guy and ask him to make me a nice Mac version?

I absolutely love The Journal and have found it an indispensable tool for the last year. I carry it on my USB stick on my keychain so I can access it from any Windows machine - work or home or elsewhere. I bought it too primarly because Steve recommended it in one of his earlier posts.

Heh, I'd so love to have a Ubuntu/Linux version as well! The only reason I really use the Vista partition on my laptop is for the Journal, otherwise I'd be able to pretty much never have to use Vista!

I have used it on linux without any problems. I have also used it on vista without any problems. I keep it on a flash drive.
Seeker.. i believe i used WINE to run this. i have not needed to do it in a few months since i have been using windows more (i would rather be using linux, BUT the development i am trying to do right now needs windows)

I was going to suggest emulators for both of you and then I realized Angela why that Parallels thing stinks -- more money!

But, seeker, it would work for you I bet. WINE?

A few months ago, I installed Wine on my Ubuntu partition, and followed the direction listed but I couldn't get the Journal working. I didn't spend _that_ much time on it so maybe there's a way to get it working.

I posted a question on the Ubuntu forums about it. I'll let you know if anyone answers. Hopefully Adrienne will have an answer for you though!

It's great software, however I wish it had a Goal setting and Project management sections.

Yep. I switched a while back. There was a thread about it here and finally one day I just did it. Couldn't be happier. I wiped Vista completely and haven't missed it yet.

Wow, that is so cool! I'm very happy with Ubuntu myself, I installed it for the first time on my new laptop in December because I had read so many bad things about Vista. I love it, and find it even better then XP to use!

How did i get it to work?? i set it up a while ago, i remember it took some swearing, some vaness, some rolling of the eyes, but eventually i got it to work. I believe i originally set it up for Gentoo, but i have Ubuntu loaded right now (a girl can only compile her kernel so much), and i will have to see if i did the work on there to set it back up.

Let me check and i will let you know. It will take me a while because that is a test system and i dont even have the duel boot set back up. I will try and get to it this weekend unless you find your answer before that!

Here is what i do remember. I tried WINE and it did not work right away. I dont know if i changed emulators or if i tried to make WINE work. Lets hope, i actually did set this up on Ubuntu and i did not lose all this work when i changed distributions.

Adrienne

What happens once the 45 days are up? Is it not usable unless you buy it?

Sorry to barge in but may I just ask how you guys use the journal. It's just that I have it but I certainly don't think I am using it to it's full potential. I just jot a few notes in it where notepad and text files would of been sufficient(because they're simple). I know of Steve's articles like "how to use journalling as a problem solving tool" etc but I don't think that requires the functionality of something like the journal.

Does anyone here think it's a good idea to journal about your day? Maybe to gain a sense of clarity.

I like it becuase it keeps everything together in one place. I have a tab for blog stuff, writing ideas, buiness stuff.. etc.
I have 2 daily journals. one for thinking or impressions.. one for dreams i remember.
I could just keep alot of word docs.. if i was on linux i could even attempt to fgrep for a work, but the journal handles searching, catagories, tags, etc in a fabulous way. I really like it.
It can also post right to a blog.. I use that alot too. I also love to record travel stuff in it since i can drag and drops pics and write about them.
That is what i use most often!

Also regarding the whole linux thing. I tried for a while to get it working on my test system and i could not get it to work with WINE. I think i might have just went out and looked for a different emulator. I know for sure, i got it to work, but i just dont have the data of how i did it in more.

Has anyone tried asking the creator if there is a version or linux or if he knows how to get it to run?

Adrienne

No, but on the Wine Application DB it has a Platinum rating. Not sure how to make it work though. It seems with that rating like it should be "out of the box" but there is also only one test.

When I posted to the Ubuntu forums I got a recommendation to try Basket but not being too familiar with either software, I don't know how it compares to the Journal. (sorry I forgot to let you know seeker!)

Does anyone know how I would go about backing up the journal to external drive? It seems complicated...
