| what are some of the challenges faced when it comes to personal development? |
| |||
| Over thinking, perfectionism, over information which comes from all the self improvement ideas and techniques, people forget that the only way to get things done, is still by doing them. No fancy super technique has yet replaced that. |
| |||
| for me it has to be making no more excuses and always you keeps thinking that hardwork is painful (it isnt) also that you sort of loose touch with your family and friends a bit cause you've outgrown them, but theres lots of great people out there like you |

One of my biggest challenges is sticking with a process all the way through. I want to jump ahead to the results.

On of the major reason why some people who struggle to implement GTD is because the try to directly implement and do the 5 processes in the same time. I realised I was trying to implement - the 5 processes of GTD - Seven Habits - being sportive - eating healthy among other stuff - PUA - ... One step at a time, one step at a time... The third habit of Seven Habit: Put First Things First details a method of planning, focusing on the Quadrant II (important & not urgent), making you plan your week (and not your day), starting with: - your personnal mission statement and your long term goals, and short term goals (for the coherence) - your roles in life (spouse, manager...), for the balance. Only by thinking of it (I will do my first Quadrant II, fourth generation time management plan, tomorrow), I felt that focusing on my roles will give me more freedom and power to achieve my goals. For exemple, as a manager, I study Seven Habits (habit 3 & 4) to become a great manager and leader. It is not hard for me to find time for it because I always want and have more responsabilities. As a wannabe kitesurfer, I should improve my cardiovascular and musculation, which means go to the sportclub and train, which I never do!! I think when I will do my plan, thinking af all my roles, I will find time for it, at last. And if I make the commitment to train at least one, or 2 or three times a week, and achieve that commitment, it will empower my Be Proactive habit too Which means, this method of planning can help you to implement more process at a time. Not necessary faster for each process, but more process together. |

Ask E.T.: Thinking and Paper The explanation starts on the fifth page or something at this sentence " This is a follow-up to a post I made on this thread eighteen months ago. With the illustrative diagrams it's rather long - but I hope it gives a useful addition to the problem of dealing with paper." This method took me 1h to understand, 1h to implement it. It is very efficient. Last edited by maxdof : 04-19-2008 at 11:59 AM. |

| Thanks Maxdof, that was pretty cool. My operating system is in a state of flux at the moment. When I started my role a year ago I was able to use a purely electronic system and I was able to get away with not using a WIP area/tray as most of my tasks were things I did not need to wait for someone else's input for me to finish. Now I am finding I need to switch to a paper and electronic system and will be needing a tray. Currently I have an in tray and a filing tray, both are overflowing and my desk (3meters x 2meters) is on average about an inch deep in WIP with a 1 meter square clear spot for my laptop. I am going to make use of a drawer I have in my desk built for hanging files as my WIP area (just need to put a handle on it to make it easier to open) I mainly need to stop putting fires out, just turn the fire hoses off for a couple of hours and clean up. It's just too tempting to keep putting those fires out instead of setting things up. Thanks so much for the link. I had a quick read through and it fit perfectly with what I had envisaged. So now someone else has so kindly recorded my vision for me to refer back to while implementing it. "Great minds think alike" vs "fools fear to differ" |

I'm glad to help! This is really the kind of method you want to share... it is so easy and works so well!! Though, like in GTD, I struggle to make the weekly review, which is here only a visual scan (a photoread? Feedback here if it works well for you, and what adjustements you have made Personnaly I did no adjustements, or I added like a 'free area' or 'stuffs area' to put my wallet, phone, post it, pens... there are always some stuff just going on the desk, that you may need sometimes... |
