Hello I'm really trying to make big pushes in my life, my life is somewhat an advert for overwhelming force at the moment, however i'm looking for a way to manage things. I'm going to stay away from using the word "Productivity system" cause I hate that, all those rules, all that nonsense that often doesn't amount to anything. In response to this post if anyone mentions GTD please excuse my right to hit you with a baseball bat. The way I do things is very much my own way, so i'm looking and searching for things that I can do/use/adopt. I'm a very creative person, I would like to keep things simple. I've recently got my weekly review to something that simply translates as "Each week I ask myself who I am and what I really want, then I ask myself what I need to do to get there. The number one goal of meetings is to come up with action steps. I have one weekly review, the rest of the week is for carrying out those tasks." Now the only problem is just looking for something to tie it all together, cause it just seems like endless lists and i get to the morning or the actual day not sure on what to work on. I'm not a A to B person, i'm a person that likes to go A to Y to G to S to K to U to H to B. I'm not looking to change that, that's worked well for me. All through college I was fighting the tutors about my method of working, cause i simply wouldn't follow "the straight line" that they had set out. I finished with the highest grade possible, well above the rest of the class, don't tell me how to do it, I will do it the way i want, thanks. I subscribe to the ideas of Behance and the Action method (Action Method :: Welcome) and also this article on how to become accomplished rather than productive.. However with a lot of different ideas and projects always going through my head, i'm struggling with the day to day stuff, the ideas of the action method are great but it just seems nothing but a load of lists for different projects and i'm not sure how to manage that correctly. The sheer determination to do great things doesn't help, cause it leaves me confused and overwhelmed, since i'm often questioning what to do, how to do it and what to work on, instead of getting it done. This is even more of an issue when I am tired and since my schedule is punishing that is quite a lot! Thank you for your thoughts. |

What I am hearing is that you have a lot of lists and are not sure how to organize them all. You want to keep a lot of projects going at once and are having trouble managing the relevant information for each project so you can find it again later. If you want a software-based list manager, you could try The Journal and see if it meets your needs. You can create as many nodes and sub-nodes as you like for organization, and it is all search-able. I am also hearing that you spend "too much time" thinking about what are the most important things to do instead of doing things. This might be a good time to write in a daily journal so you can record your thought patterns and preferences over time. Or it might just be a time to sit for a moment and quiet your mind. Sit quietly until something comes into your mind that is compelling enough to move you, and then do it. It sounds like you get a lot done and are generally a very productive person, hope you find something that works for you! |

Hey, You're saying in your post that you feel overwhelmed by your big goals, and to be honest, the post itself sounds kind of overwhelming and a tad unorganised - like you're trying to get all your ideas and thoughts out at once. I know how that feels, being a disorganised, creative type myself. Something that really works for me, is taking some calm time out to break the bigger goals down into smaller tasks and focus on one task at a time. You can mix up several goals this way (it's like multi-tasking several projects at work, i guess). Some tasks need others to be done first, some can be done whenever you feel like it. I also find it helpful to write down a timeline, or plan. I don't follow it strictly, but it helps me create benchmarks, and if I go off the track I know where to come back to. It's more like a guide for me. It's not set in stone, so I can change it any time I want as well. I like to think it's the artiste's way of getting organised *L* Hopefully it'll help you. |
