I'm trying pretty hard right now to move away from employment, but if I was to quit now, I'd go broke, and as a result, start to starve. Ok, I could be creative and mooch or something like that (I could be homeless and do pretty well, it just wouldn't be enjoyable), but it'd be mighty hard being vegan doing that, and mooching isn't ideal (at least, it feels wrong to me).
i think the strategy is to just do it. i feel many people stay in jobs way too long because they share a similar mindset to you. you believe you'd go broke and starve, but i doubt it. somehow you can find a way, and without a job to take up your day, you have much more time to do so.

congratulations angela! i am impressed that you took the plunge and i have no doubt you will prosper!

Thanks for the encouragement, Beel! I needed that. Just got off the phone with mr. and mrs. boss and am feeling a little bit little. I'm a bit disappointed that mr. was so..... dry, so lacking in love. I understand that he's irritated. but I'm making a point of giving him almost unlimited notice, and am committed to making the transition as smooth as possible, and it felt a little bad that he was all about him and not at all about what's best for everyone. That's how it always is, though, and it reminds me of why I'm going. Five years together -- I'm a little sad. Mrs. boss was quite sweet, though.

sigh.

Sure thing, let me know, and good luck! You're going to love your new job (working for yourself) a whole lot more than your old job, I promise!

Angela,

I don't even "know" you, but I am 100% sure you made the right choice. You have a passion to help people on this board. You also have a great intuitive sense, and a real knack for coaching. For you NOT to pursue this path would be ridiculous!

I would be happy to submit a testimonial and be considered a former client/reference. After all, you helped me TREMENDOUSLY back in November. It was truly a great experience.

Congrats, Miss Tough Stuff, on living freely and boldly. It's been busy here, but you always have a place in my head and heart.

Congratulations Angela, I admire your courage. I've just put an intention out for a new job, and now I'm waiting for it to fall into my lap. (I know, I'm a coward). I wish you all the best for the very exciting future.
Love
Lisa

I jumped into the void with no savings and no income. My strategy was summed up by "AAARGH! OOOOHHH! EEEEEE!" But financial support just came to me. It always does. I've been in the void a few times between things and every time, I come out on top. It's scary but it's also an incredible test. I grow the most when I'm in these spaces.

That is so awesome Angela! Good for you!!! I can understand your fear, but you are now staring at it right in the face. So give that fear the old Evil Eye now. I am truly inspired!

Angela, have you ever seen the movie Spirited Away? You make me think of the little girl, Chihiro, who really grows into herself and into her love and life, and learning to love instead of being fearful and angry about things. See it if you can!

So, Angela, how are you doing on your quitting-your-job journey? Do you have a date set for when your last day will be?

Perhaps foolishly, I told my boss I wouldn't leave him in a lurch -- that I'd stay until he's got a new person installed. I'm not in too much of a hurry because I like getting the paycheck, but I'm ready, you know? I'm ready to get my own site and business together, and it's so busy winding down my role here that I'm pretty pooped out in the evenings, and hungry for sleep in the mornings. Also Danger Man is as sick as a dog and I'm being Nurture Woman at the moment. All this is not a problem; I know it's temporary and I'm okay with it, just happily anticipatory. It feels really good to clean everything up and make it inviting for the next person, and to write down (so far 6 pages and counting) all my job duties. I'm the only person in the world, including my boss, who knows what I do and how it's done, and it's kind of fun to have him finally be present to what he's losing. If by next Friday he hasn't told me his course of action and distinguished an eta (etd?), then I'll announce the end of this month as my deadline.

I'm thinking April Fool's Day would be the perfect day to mark the beginning of my new era.

Meanwhile, the other project that Danger Man and I were talking about is shaping up and becoming more exciting, too. I want to breathe deeply and not spread myself too thin, but I am delighted to have so much fun on my horizon.

It reminds me of that time I learned how to fly on the trapeze. I was so petrified standing there on that little platform, cursing and sweating, terrified of that moment when the instructor would say "HUP!" and I was supposed to let go of the rope, grab the bar, and swing out into what looked like certain bloody mayhem. When that HUP! came, I leaped out into what turned out to be freedom, joy, and connection (I did the catch! you know, where the guy on the other end of the trapeze catches you and then throws you back to your bar). I don't think I ever felt more alive. This time in my life is like that, except less sweating, cursing, and spandex.

I really want to focus on working through my technical and aesthetic glitches this weekend, and get my site up by the end of the weekend. It's www.alegrialife.com.

Hi Angela,

I just read this thread for the first time. Congratulations! I wish you all the best!

Going out on your own is very challenging but also very rewarding. I know you'll do really well.

Cheers!

Well, for eighteen months at least, I'll have COBRA -- I can continue with my existing company-provided insurance if I pay the entire premium, twice what I'm paying now.

And I am building super-abundant income in the next year and a half so that affording health insurance will be a snap!

Awesome. I will soon get a job (the kind with a capital J) that has excellent benefits so that I will have no gap in coverage.

Angela, YOU are going to LOVE the roller coaster that is freedom! I've read enough of your posts here to know that you are built for the ride...

It so happens that I have a re-release of a career development book hitting the market on April Fool's Day... I guess I also felt that 4/1 would be the perfect time for a new beginning. (That, or I figured a career dev book called How to Self-Destruct really shouldn't launch on any day except April Fool's Day.) I'm sitting on a stack of advance copies... in celebration of your newfound liberation, I'll be glad to send you a copy, on me. Drop me a note if you're interested.

Again, kudos to you for *making a decision.* Whatever the ultimate outcome, you are now calling the shots for yourself... and how nice is that!
