Default Underachiever

I just heard that a colleague has just been promoted to an executive position at a prestigious position. I am older than he and have a very junior position. We met 10 years ago and in that time he worked his way up and took an MBA, while I struggled with depression and anxiety and "finding my way".

I am so disappointed with myself for dicking around for so long.

I'll stop whining now. Just wanted to get that off my chest, in hopes of it's power disapating.

Having struggled with depression myself for many years, and having a few friends with the same issues, I'd hardly call it "dicking around". Everybody's lives are different, and obviously he's had very different challenges to face compared to yours. Comparing yourself to others will always make you feel bad - there's always somebody smarter, brighter, sexier, hotter than you who's younger and doing better. Focus on your own path, finding your own way through life rather than worrying about how you're doing compared to others and I'm sure you'll start to feel better - you can start by applauding yourself for having got through the difficulties of depression and anxiety. They can be tough.
