Default Mandatory Paper Records?

What exactly is necessary to keep in original paper form vs. just a scanned copy where the original is shredded? For how long do you have to keep these records? And bonus points if you know the requirements for Canada.

So far all I can think of are paper receipts/invoices for tax audits (and the time limit is around 7 years). Legal documents/contracts feel like they have to be, but I'm not sure.

elai, I keep the paper work in a safe place. (the original copy that is) If you ever dispose sensitive papers, be sure to burn them =)

I wonder this too. I have been scanning in most of my paper posessions but I've kept my bank statements and other "official" stuff. I'd get rid of it if I knew I could.
