| Hi all, A new habit that I am trying to implement this year is to read one book on Self-Development per week. More importantly I am actually going to try and finish the books and implement what it is that I have learnt in it. As opposed to just reading them and then doing nothing. As I have been away on holiday I am using this week as starting week 1. The book I have started with is called The Power of Focus by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. Basically it is all about forming successful habits and focusing on the job in hand. I will give a review at the end of each week and let people know what I thought of it. Does anyone else want to join me? We can then share information on books we find interesting. Hope everyone has a good year. |

| Great idea Guy. I am looking for the motivation to do this so hopefully this thread will give me the kickstart I needed. First book (started last night) is "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" by Deepak Chopra. I'll update as I progress.

| Well, it is a great challenge to read a BOOK a week. To read a PD book a week, might loose the implementation of it and the core of the book. Some books just need some time to 'fall into your mind' and change your habits. My suggestion is to seek first what you want to grow, then gather the specific info and target for the change. Still, I will be looking for your reviews........... Good luck

| Which is a better self-development book - "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" or "101 Great Vegetarian Recipes"? "Rich Dad Poor Dad" or "How to Install Wordpress"? One of my longest running frustrations with the self-help field is that "feel good motivation" and "actionable resources" are often kept separate. The pump you get from reading self-help books isn't unlike nicotine, it fades quickly and you're left searching for the next hit. At least with a text of some sort (something that creates a new ability / talent you didn't have before) you are truly left with a measurable improvement over simply feeling better and having a nicer attitude. Look for books that require you to achieve something besides just listing what you would like to achieve. |

| LOL Zombie. I agree...I personally love that nicotine like hit from a PD book, movie or online read. I wish they all lasted.... I too have made this same committment for the year, but I plan to read all of Steve's recommended books on the site. I've printed the list, and will get whatever I can to start tomorrow at the library. I've read both Rich Dad, Poor Dad and 7 Habits (also 7 Habits for highly successful families), so I have a bit of a head start. |

| I suggest you add Madame Bovary to your list. You won't learn more about human nature anywhere. And I will be really impressed if you can knock it off in a week.

| I'm not too sure if you'll get jaded from reading that much of self improvement stuff. Mixing it up with some classics would be good.

| Guy665, Do you already have a list of books that you're going to read? Maybe you can share your list. I have read a lot of PD books. I don't always finish them but I always get something of value out of it. You don't have to wait to implement new habits until after you have read the entire book. You might read something in the first chapter that inspires you to take action. The important thing is that you "move" Shirley

| Thanks for all the messages. I am nearly at the end of my first book so I will post of review tomorrow. By the way I should point out that even though I will be reading PD books, I consider autobiographies of successful people to be PD. So it won't all be harcore PD. It will also be inspiring stories of people who have really succeeded or made a difference in the world. |
