Default Finding a mentor

This years goal for renewal/refreshment of soul/self
is to find a mentor.
some one who opens a world of possibilities to me.
at this point i feel i really have no passion and what i was interested in i am no longer thrilled.
not offer me possibilities, but to show me the possibilities.
i'm not looking to leech.

identity disorder? perhaps. but i think my next mnove would be to find a mentor for me to see more of what is out there. My life is good, but it could be better.

I shall keep my day job and hopefully at night meet up with folks who get stuff done.
i'm ready to seek out the next level @ 36yrs old.

any tips or ideas of where i could naturally meet people.
I don't socialize much except for the same friends of 10 yrs. but i'm ready for growth and change. but don't know where to start

Use creative visualization techniques to "manifest" the mentor and the person you would like to meet. This is a good place to start and then go with the flow.

Brandi, mentors are good. The problem is that people who usually look for mentors are usually very bright, so they need to find someone who is usually on a higher level of consciousness or appears very inspirational to the seeker to get any benefit from that potential mentor. (if you get me)

The problem with that is them people are very hard to find. But you'd be surprised as you find them in the most surprising places

You can't really go out and 'find' a good mentor as such I don't think. You will realize when you meet someone that they have a certain spark or passion that you find very influential. You will know straight away in fact that they are potential mentor material.

Although that said, maybe I'm not sure on what you mean, i don't know if you just want to go to some club or something and get help. (Like Toastmasters ) I dunno.

Normal.

Just in case I'd fluked on a dud one, I went to a different group (there are dozens around me) and it was the same.

Toastmasters is full of normal people with normal jobs, who just happened to be interested in improving their public speaking and/or confidence.

I went in with expectation that it would be full of highly self-motivated people doing wonderful things with their lives, and it wasn't.

So if people have other ideas of where all the people are doing great things with their lives, I'm listening!

I don't think they have to have 'done great things' they just to have to be inspiring.

Example. Currently, I'm at school (High school to U.S) I love all the sciences and mathematics. Last year, I had a supply teacher (for a few physics lessons, after are old one got sacked) who was extremely passionate about mathematics/physics, he spoke of them subjects like I've never heard a teacher speak of their respective subject before, his sheer passion and inspiration was immense. I knew that I should speak to this guy again. I did. He offered to teach me Physics and mathematics in lunch times and frees (which i didn't mind - in fact i jumped at the chance).

It may seem like ordinary to some but there is a few things to point out:

-Not many kids can beat me for passion in science, but i needed someone who had a greater passion than me for me to find the sciences even more interesting/work even harder.

-Had this guy done great thing? Probably not I assumed at the start. What good would a elderly supply teacher from teacher agency have done?

-Found out he was a graduate of Cambridge and he once lectured at Harvard (rare even for someone in the U.S - never mind England). -(Granted that doesn't mean he's done great things)

-The man had a big impact on me and my future and as a scientist - well Physicist now - Would anyone have thought a supply teacher could do that?

-And again, you find these sorts of people in the most strangest of places. So chin up.

-Sorry it's all me me me, but i needed something to relate to.

Hi Brandi,

Yeah, there are so many great ways to go about this...I've had many mentors in my lifef, and mentored many others myself as well...

I think it all starts out with passion. What is it that is calling to you, what are you drawn to, and that energizes you?

What types of goals and intentions...are at this " next level?"

That's where it all starts, then as you probably know, you get what you focus on, and will draw in opportunities to you that will start to match your vision...

And the outcome of that is as you start to act on those, opportuntiies will present themselves for you to meet new people, join new organizations, and mingle with the people that you might want to hook up with...

Sometimes you may have to pay for it...there are many coaches, teachers, and mentors out there who have programs where you can join and be part of their energy, their life, teachings, models etc...

Like for me someone like Mark Victor Hansen of Chicken Soup for the soul Fame...is such a great model to hang around...he is infectious, have the biggest vision of anyone on the planet...all the people that are hanging out here are super motivated and empowered...like minded people...

Even in one of my business ventures, I have been lucky enough to draw in partners that are friends and mentors...so I pass t hat down to everyone I teach and assist as well...

It's an ongoing thing here...the books lead to seminars, and to other great things...

there are also meetup groups that cover all kinds of topics and themes... by location...checkout meetup.com (hopefully write address)...

but it all starts with that passion, what you love, and what your vision is...then the good ol' Universe goes to work to bring you the right people and opportunities...

All the best,

There is a well known saying....
Quote:
"When the student is ready, The Teacher will appear".
Back to my point on creatively visualizing the "person you would like to meet", decide for what purpose you want this mentor for and then ask The Universe (or God or any other spiritual guidance) to provide.

It is also possible that you can have more than one mentor; one for each purpose.

All the best,
Evelyn

I agree with Brutha and recommend you go to Toastmasters. Not necessarily because you're going there to meet people (although you will meet some very nice and supportive people usually), but because going there every week and having a role in the meeting will help you get in the habit of having to stretch yourself in a social setting. You can then use that pratice in other settings.

Toastmasters isn't about other people. It's about you stretching yourself, about improving and practicing your own communication skills. It's not an elitist club, it's a club open to everyone who wants to improve their communication skills. I bet you that everyone who have been members for a while in those clubs you visited are a lot better off in their communication and leadership skill then when they joined, and that's all that matters.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing ToastMasters for what it does and does well.
But having read a lot of StevePavlina's stuff, you would get the impression that ToastMasters is a big part of what has made him successful, and that a lot of people like him are doing it, and I want to dispel that misconception.

A lot of people like Steve Pavlina are toastmasters but overall most people aren't like Steve.

Around a thrid are self employed in my club. There are also students and people who have a 'normal job'. It's very diverse, but every club is different.

Another new member of this forum from Berlin contact me a few days ago and asked about meeting up together to discuss PD. I don't thing it was that much of a coincidence that I already knew him from my toastmasters club.

In my Toastmasters is me as a life coach, NLP Master Practitioner and published author, Andy Dooley, humorist writer and professional public speaker (also brother of Mike Dooley from The Secret), 2 professional hypnotherapists (other than myself), a Reiki Grand Master and they are only the ones I know as I only transferred in from my last club last night!!!!

TM is great and as for mentors it's great for that too. Of course every club doesn't have a Tony Robbins or even a Steve Pavlina but they usually have a wealth of experience necessary for being a good mentor.

Check out From Coach To Awakener by Robert Dilts to see what a good mentor should offer and that may help.

Im also interested in finding a mentor. I have come to the point where I feel I could do with a bit more help and advice with some of my business and professional goals.

Techcrunch featured a website to help you find mentors yesterday however it was still in beta and I wasnt very impressed with it.

Never heard of toastmasters before! thanks for introducing me Ill check it out.

I get that your goal is to find a mentor, someone who will help you with renewal/refreshment of soul & self -- someone who will open up worlds of possibility for you and assist you in seeing your passions and purpose.

Those are very inspiring aims. I would like to invite you to consider that, although it seems like it would be easier with a mentor to show you the way, relying on an external source to open up possibilities for yourself won't necessarily speed up your ability to see what you want to see; it's just one way. You also have the resources to open up worlds of possibility for yourself without pinning too much on one person, whom you would call your mentor. You could mentor yourself.

There's an external resource that I used, not to show me possibilities, but to show me how to show myself unlimited possibilities for getting anything and everything I want -- what I don't know I don't know. The Landmark Forum (and the Advanced Course) are the absolute most valuable things I've ever done in the realm of personal development. It is a little pricey, but when I think back to what it has made available to me since I've done it, I would pay it again. I wish I had done the education when I was a teenager, because it would have saved me a lot of anguish in my thinking. As it is, I'm so, so grateful that I did this work. I highly recommend it. And the people you meet in that work are the kind of people I think you are looking for. There are quite a few of what I call "Markies" -- people who are REALLY into it and continuing seminars, etc., but they're not all that way, and you don't have to do more than just the forum and the advanced course to get incredible value. (I found myself having to deal with my reaction to the marketing they do to get you to do more, but out of that I got for myself a very useful, high-quality "No" that I had never had before, so even the "bad" stuff paid off for me.) Check out Landmark Education: Seminars, Courses & Landmark Forum -- they have an online introduction. Please let me know what you think if you do!

Angela
