| Curse words simply evolved (usually) from more complex and expressive word groupings to describe something effectively, efficiently, and by using less tongue time. While I haven't given a great deal of time to the etymology of curse words, I have dabbled, and it is interesting to note that many 'big sexy words' have often become compounded into simpler forms which are often seen as slang words or curse words (the line there is sometimes considered somewhat fuzzy). I feel that too many people associate curse words with low vibration, or the offloading of blame (whoever said that was unhealthy?), or an immature/uneducated intellect. "F*ck you a**hole!" always feels much better than silent submission, then from there, once you have expelled, you can move onto reminding yourself of your ability to guide your emotions with thought, and ultimately, your divine ability to guide your reality with thought - making you feel better in knowing that you don't need to lash out at that person anymore and you can simply go on with your day trouble free and feeling good; confident that it won't happen again if you remain cool, calm, and mindful of your own thoughts and feelings. Personally I use curse words often to express excitement about something, or a sudden surge of good feelings - often the only words I can find are curse words. They are quick and expressive (if not used too often, as stated in an earlier post) and can keep up with the sudden rise of that good feeling. Once those feelings have subsided and I have returned to a much more baseline set point, I tend to resume the slower, more articulate, and eloquent forms of speech programmed into me by my parents and society. In fact, the internet slang and KittyPidgin waves are another good example of language evolution, and usually it is the 'old people' that come out and say it is silly, stupid, and immature. Language in general is given far too much weight, in my opinion, we are even taught to THINK in a given language (thought should be 'language free'). Words are one of the most powerful tools we use to give form to our thoughts and feelings, whether we're speaking them out loud or to ourselves. So I disagree with you about "too much weight" being given to language. I revere language and the possibility of creating it affords. |

| Vladtess, I hope that you'll be able to substantiate your assumptions in your outline. They seem more like stereotypical generalizations than concrete reasons. And developing concrete reasons into a persuasive argument, more than anything else, is the heart of your assignment. You might want to say something like: "Cursing is to language what Britney Spears is to news. We give them both more attention than they deserve." And then build your argument from there. Once you make an assertion, be specific with your supporting argument. Do some research and find tangible evidence as to why using offensive language isn't in our best interest. Good luck with the essay. I hope my brief post is helpful. |
