Lightbulb Vocabulary improvement game... for charity!

I found this too much fun not to pass on. Of course, trying to figure out exactly which forum it belonged in was a wee bit challenging...

FreeRice

For every vocabulary question you get right, 10 grains of rice are donated. Imagine that, simultaneously learning, having fun, and doing good in the world. Huh.

And yes, it is ridiculously easy to use this as a procrastination method, but it's intellectually challenging in a way different from anything I've done since high school. Always nice to find a new way to keep the brain sharp.

Cool game. Helped me suck up the last few minutes of work, too.

Awesome site!

According to the International Development Research Centre the average weight of 1000 grains of rice is 27.5–28.4 grams.

There are 28 grams / ounce, so about 16,000 grains of rice per pound.

That brings us the yield amounts in pounds for FreeRice so far: Looks like they are doing about a ton of rice a day.

Pretty good..

Spiffy! I hadn't bothered to follow the numbers. I was too busy geeking out with the game.

LOL! Apparently I'm not the only one sucking up a few spare minutes of work on that site, then!

I've been looking up any words that I guess wrong -- especially as the definitions aren't always exact, which I think increases the challenge. Like in the example you gave, sulking way of behaviour, whereas a pout is one physical action that's typical in sulking behaviour. Actually, I look up anything I guess correctly (rather than choose right because I *know* it's right), so that I can see what the word actually means. I often find the word origins to be interesting as well.

Just for the record though, I'm not cheating. Not as much fun that way. I'm only looking up the words AFTER guessing.

(As to where I'm looking things up, I've got a nifty little dictionary widget, but I expect a physical dictionary or dictionary.com would work perfectly well.)
