Ahoy everyone, I'm finding difficulty in thinking of beliefs to change anymore, so I'd really appreciate it if anyone could list/talk about some beliefs they changed and how they did it. Perhaps I'll get some ideas about which ones to change. I think I'm not recognizing them due to familiarity blindness. Some of the more important ones I've changed over the last year: 1. I changed social beliefs. Instead of thinking "I'll do something stupid and people will laugh at me" when I think of talking to a random person, I started thinking, "If I do do something stupid, odds are that person will be too apathetic to remember me." Oddly enough, that was the first step in becoming a more outgoing and social person. There's others I changed, too, but that was the first big one. 2. Failure isn't the end all, it's more of a temporary defeat and a learning experience. I changed this belief the hard way, by taking part in a stand-up competition that was going to be televised nationally while I'm not a stand-up comedian. As you can imagine, I bombed big time. I was pretty depressed for a few weeks, but then I realized that while it had been bad, no one remembers it anymore and I'm still alive. If anything, the friends I had brought along gained more respect for me for taking a big risk like that. This also changed my beliefs about taking risks and I started taking more of them. 3. I can be rich, too. This used to be a vague notion, but after doing a study of personal finance and investing, I realized that I can be rich, too. 4. Realizing that I control my inner state. While I've always been pretty blasé to outside events in terms of my inside (I'm an eternal optimist), I really realized the power of the control I have inside. I'd appreciate any other belief shifts to more empowering beliefs people have had lately. Last edited by RT Wolf; 11-14-2006 at 03:42 PM. |
