This is something new to me as I have never joined nor posted forums before. I need some advise. I am in my early 50's and I have always thought that Counseling is my passion and I wanted to develop this skill so that someday, I would be able to help and reach out to people who are hurting. I have recently enrolled myself in a Graduate Program in Counseling. However, everyone in my class are very young and very smart. I guess I don't have a great aptitude for learning. Writing has never been my forte and I know I am going to struggle in doing my research projects and other writings. Should I simply quit and forget about my dream of becoming a counselor? Likewise, I am concerned about my job prospect. Please help! Thank you.

Welcome Confused gal-

Never give up on your dream. You are in your 50s, and everyone else in your class is young, who cares? Your age has tremendous value in the wisdom and real world experience and knowledge that you bring.

If I was a potential client/patient and I needed counseling, I would much rather have an older person providing guidance and advise that had practical real world/life experience than some 20/30 something with little or no background/experience at all.

Please do not take offense-but I am a Christian beleiver who tries to openly profess his faith. If you are a beleiver too-great-just pray and ask to God for the strength and courage you need. He hears your prayers of petition.

Secondly, have the courage and leap of faith in stepping our of your comfort zone in trying to help others. You are only limited by your fears.

Best-

Wayne

thank you so much for your reply. i have a class this evening so your encouragement means a lot to me. yes, i am a christian believer and i appreciate the reminder to keep on praying and asking God for His strength and courage. the challenges ahead of me are really daunting and i have got so much doubt and fear regarding my abilities but i take your reply as a reminder to rely on God. i know He has put this desire in my heart. thank you for taking time to answer my concern.

Confused gal-

I'm glad my post was an encuragement to you. Hang on to these two bible verses:

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

and

Phillipians 4: 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

As an FYI...there are very few Christians if at all on this forum-so if you want to e-mail you can. Remember to keep the faith!

Best-

Wayne
