I have a serious problem with subvocalizing while thinking, in fact i know that people can't "hear" my thoughts but, some people can hear my subvocalization. I know this to be the fact because i heard to young boys who are friends of mine talking about something that i said, and one time he said, on the side of the throat, and some people can hear me on the back of my throat. Sometimes i subvocalize in the back of my throat, with my mouth closed. So how can you stop subvocalizing while thinking? It makes me really anxious when i feel that people can hear my sv. I don't know if i'm unconsciously moving my vocal cords or throat muscles or what. Can anyone help?

^^ the way i do it, is that i don't focus my eyes but relax them and instead of reading something, i browse over it and see it in my mind as an image. it's not a fast way to read, but it's really fun. this way you won't be subvocalizing but seeing it as a visual theme /movie/image or reality.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying... How can people hear your subvocalization? Do you actually emit a certain amound of sound? As far as I know, subvocalization implies not making any sound at all. If you don't, are your friends psychic, or how can they interpret the subtle movements into words?

This reminds me of Orson Scott Card's Ender series of books -- there is a computer that a couple of characters speak to through subvocalizing. BTW, I once read that when someone is recovering from a surgery that affects their throat or voice, they're not allowed to read because they unconsciously use these muscles. Subvocalization is something that I realize hinders reading speed (even though I read quite fast). I wonder what it's like to read while gargling water, or doing that motorboat thing with my lips. I would try it now, but I'm at work |
