Your points are valid. It would be an interesting web application, but I don't really have the spare time for another project. I'm sure there are developers out there that would be interested though, and I'd bet anything that there's someone already working on it. Hopefully they can get the word out.

There are already some sites that do stuff like that, like Meebo.com. There are also web browsers like Flock that you can check out.
