Default nomad group

Hello all,
I can definitely relate to the feeling that I am a nomad in this world. I am currently living in Germany and anticipate moving to Japan next year. I've been fortunate to visit such places such as France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Japan, India, Singapore, Mexico and Canada. I am always humbled by the experience.

Thanks for the the welcome, Weena!
I am originally from southern california, near Los Angeles. I left on 06/06/06 and haven't had a chance to return since then. The one thing I will say about traveling is that it seems that no matter where you go, it's still as if you left a piece of yourself where you have been. In fact, as I see more of this world, I get the the distinct feeling that I left a piece of myself from former lives in different places, as if I knew I would return.

Ah yes... I still feel very in love with Ireland and Scotland. I hope to go back there with my husband and children someday. Though i must say there are places i did not like all that much and would never want to visit again . It's good that you thoroughly enjoyed every place!

Can I join? I've always had the same home base (FL and various parts therein) but I've been to the UK (england and scotland, engaged to a scottish man with itchy feet for a while), all over western europe, jamaica (going back to work on a farm for a couple of weeks with my son in january), and canada. And all over the east coast and southwestern US. Never been to the west coast, though.

My dad was career military and thought it was important for us to travel starting very early in life. I got sent to summer boarding schools away from home starting when I was 12.

I've been dormant for the past 3 years with pregnancy and a little one, but he's big enough for me to tote to various parts of the world now.

Hahaha belgium. Bruges is surreal, and I got a parking ticket in brussels that I never paid.

yeaaaah...same but not in Belgium. Before we went to Australia we traveled for a few months, around Europe first, then Thailand 5 weeks. My fave places in Europe were Ireland, Scotland and Holland. For some reason i am not all that crazy about France and Italy. People are too loud and snob for my liking (not everywhere of course but in lots of places). It's however quite pretty. Cinque Terre and Florence were good places. Around Rome is insane.

Thailand is just awesome. Rats aside.

I am very grounded, but have a constant urge to travel. It makes life difficult sometimes, always having to start over. My kids don't always like it.

Born in San Francisco, married a Roma Gypsy when I was too young and lived in a caravan for several years. Moved to the UK for a while, then back to the US to get a divorce. Lived on the Pacific Coast for many years, around the sea, mountains, woods and high desert.

Wherever I go, I want to be near mountains. Otherwise I get homesick. I'm much happier at high altitudes.

I was in italy in 2006 during the world cup so everyone was generally jovial. I wanted to stop in cinque terra but my ex was on a mission. We stayed in a house right across the footbridge to the civita di bagnoregio a la Rick Steves. I am absurdly fond of that guy and I would like to have dinner with him and pick his brain. He's unabashedly dorky.

I'm an American, so we drove through Firenze, I'm looking at the map saying "wow I wonder where Florence is. This is a big city we're driving through, and it's right where Florence is supposed to be!" Dur.

Rome was hot, crowded, expensive, and pick pockety.

Northern Europe was cleaner, I liked Belgium best to be honest. Fantastic fusion of food.

my dad had a story about cockroaches coming out of the drain in the shower when he turned on the water, but I think this is a common story among many travelers.

I hear you! I live on a "mountain" (Australia being fairly flat this is a mountain...not quite Mont Blanc though ).

I have to live near trees. Lots and lots and lots of trees. I get depressed without them (lived in country Victoria in quite a tree-less area and i hated it).

Yeah i miss some of the food very much. Fruity bake goods especially. In Australia bakeries have mostly stuff with pink icing or smarties on top (yuk). Though I must say fruits and vegs in Australia are awesome.

I have cockroaches stories from being on an old stinky boat from mainland Thailand to the island of Ko-Taoh (we sort of traveled cheap so we could stay there for a long time). For the showers it was more scorpions and rats. My husband got the scorpion. I got the rat (i was not showering but i was about to use the bathroom and the rat bounced everywhere before disappearing through the drain. I was NOT happy because my husband told me it was just my imagination the few nights before...so seeing it in the light of day i got a bit and insisted to get a better room).

I'm in! I definitely feel like the whole planet is my playground.

I was born in France, lived there then in Germany for eight years, came back to France and now I'm preparing my next emigration, which will be either Netherlands or Norway. I also want to spend a few years somewhere in South America, a few years in an English speaking country, and a few years in Russia. And probably in a few more countries.

I want in! I've lived in the USA, Iceland, Japan, and traveled around about 50 countries, including every continent but Antarctica, mostly solo. Now I'm in Florida and aching for mountains and cold weather.

Ok I am in... Is there a facebook group or is this thread the group?

Homebase: Brisbane Australia.

Currently: Margate UK, Tomrrow, London UK

Travelled to: Vancouver BC, Seattle, Las vegas, Toronoto, South of England, and Hong Kong.

Future: Who knows, but the nomad livestyle begins next year...

I have always liked the idea of a semi nomadic lifestyle, but never taken the time to travel or even consider it. Then 9 weeks ago, I booked the time off work (6 weeks) and left home to travel for that time almost 5 weeks ago. and I have visted those places above.

I am very grateful I was able to align this trip with attending CGW #5, it has really given me a basis to work on moving to the nomadic lifestyle and away from working in one place.

Wow, that's great to hear - and a great compliment to us Norwegians! Nice to see you're in Brazil now - that is DEFINITELY one of my favorite countries in the world (I could cry just thinking about it).

And I'd like to join a nomad group - I do move around quite a bit, after all. I'm in Norway right now, just got back from Kuala Lumpur where I got myself a new place to stay (and I'll be back there in a couple of weeks - anyone from KL here?) and I've lived in places like Australia and New Zealand (3 years in OZ, 1 in NZ), and spent a great deal of time in South East Asia, Brazil and even some in the US. Love traveling and experiencing other cultures. As I have a fairly mobile business I don't even know where I'll be settling down next (if I don't make KL a permanent home, of course...) - and I quite like that.

I fit in this group too.

I was born in Canada, grew up in the US, then went to Sweden, then to Canada for some years, then back to Sweden for about 2 years, then back to Canada, then to Finland, then to Algeria, then to the U.S., now I'm back in Sweden - and those are only the places where I've lived (minus all the moves within each country).

The travel list is a lot longer.

Besides that, I have 3 citizenships. I'm a citizen of the world and I don't have an allegiance to any country (just likes and dislikes), but I say I'm Canadian, because I am most fond my birthplace.

Welcome all

So what have been your favourite experiences abroad? What have you discovered or learned outside of your own homeland? Have you had any scary experiences? What are your favourite places?

Default wanderers . .

A-ha . . . was just wondering which national group to post in then saw this - how fitting!

As I said in my "hello" message, Scots originally, currently living in England after 10 years in France and now working mostly in Scandinavia (Norway most often)

not that I have itchy feet. . . honest!

This is my group. Ive lived a quarter of my life in Europe, a quarter in N.America and half in Asia. And during that half I flew abroad several times a year.

The other day I was trying to renew my European passport in America, but they said I have to renew it where I was born, in Asia.

I adjust very well where ever I am. But in NY I feel very much at home. I guess bc so many here are like me.
