PWL : Did you visit Mayan temples around there? Central America attracts me for that, ancient civilisations just fascinate me.

I smiled reading the bath thing, reminds me of Thailand...actually Thailand was not the worse, Africa was more interesting as we had to get water into the wells and fill a bucket if we wanted to have a little cleanse. I was seventeen so i certainly loved going back home and take a shower and sit on a toilet. I realised then how we take all the 'luxury' for granted and still manage to complain .

Great! Maybe if you looked at some photos from your travels that might help you remember them, sometimes it helps me. And sometimes it doesn't

Yes I did, but not many. I saw the one in the jungle in northern Guatemala. The name escapes me. And teotihaucan in Mexico. I lived not far from there, so I went a few times.

This spot in Honduras was actually just around the corner from Copan, one of the spots there.

I met lots of Mayan people too, which was totally fun for me. I rented a room for a while, in Guatemala City, in the home of an awesome Mayan family.

Ooh, I like this group already. More travel stories please!

I am a long-term traveller: I like to settle in a country for 3 months or 3 years and move on to the next when I feel I'm done. I have stayed in the US as a student, in Malaysia working for an international trade institution, in Japan as a waitress and later as an engineer, and visited plenty more places on the side. Lately, I've complicated my travel plans by adding to my packing list a sweet Dutch boy... we will emigrate to Korea soon and see where that leads us. Hopefully to a round-the-world life and multilingual babies!

I'm in!

I've lived in three countries already at the ripe old age of 19. I think I moved house an average of once a month last year, in Barcelona, Spain and around Barcelona (spent a couple of weeks living in a cave in a mountain called Montserrat where all the UFOs are supposed to go.. I didn't see any ). Now I'm in Bilbao, Spain where my parents live, to focus on my blog. Next stop is either France, Japan or India. Maybe Indonesia, I just talked with some guys who have an indigo network there.

I had no idea you were 19! I thought you were in your late 20s. Plenty of people tell me Barcelone is great - is it an enjoyable place even if one isn't a fan of clubbing and night life?

Never been into clubs either - I like Barcelona as a city because it has everything, it's very cosmopolitan. On the other hand to live in, the energy is not great. There are very few parks, the population lives exclusively in flats so there are a lot of people packed into one place - that makes a nasty stressy feel to the place, though I think all cities have a pretty dark energy compared to the country. The seaside does mellow it out a bit though.

Catalan people suck as a culture, they're very closed. But Barcelona is full of people from all places, which is what I like about it. Spirituality is probably more visible in Barcelona than in any other town in Spain. The homosexual scene is big too. So we have a tolerant, if cold and disconnected, atmosphere. You're allowed to do anything, they say, so long as you don't say hi or make eye contact. I can verify that - I once sat on a bench with my penis hanging out of my trousers just to see if i could get a reaction... NOT ONE.

All depends on what you are into, I can't compare Barcelona too well to other places because I have a different perspective on it... was a different person in Barcelona than when I was in other places... but in general I feel like I prefer living in smaller towns.

Hope this is of some help to you,

Andrew

I'm going to Barcelona in a couple months, but only for a couple weeks. I don't speak Catalan but I guess it's a good way to learn.

When I was on Argentina I also spent a few days on a place where they told us we were going to see UFOs "for sure". As expected, no little green men showed up. They must hate travellers for some reason because the natives keep saying they see them all the time

Sure, though you won't really need it, Spanish works. I can understand Catalan more or less now but I never put any effort into learning to speak it.

Most of people in Barcelona is fluent in Spanish but people says they don't speak it very frequently because of the whole "Catalonia is not part of Spain" stuff.

There's this joke about the 2 most famous catalan stereotypes:

A man from Madrid goes to a bar on Barcelona and asks for a beer in Spanish. The barman tells him: "Són noranta-cinc cèntims"(it's 95 cents). The man pays 90 cents and starts drinking his beer.

The barman says: "Escolti falten cinc céntims"(listen, you have to pay 5 more cents) but the man does not even look at him.

The barman, repressing his anger says: "Escolti que em deu cinc céntims; no em faci muntar un nombre... m'està escoltant perfectement"(listen, there's 5 cents left, there's no need to get mad here... you're understanding me perfectly) but the man keeps drinking quietly.

So, red of anger, the barman yells: "Escúchame, faltan 5 céntimos, sé que me estás entendiendo hijo de p*** así que paga!"(same as above in Spanish)

The man gives 5 more cents to him and with a wide smile in his face says: "Sabía que por 5 céntimos te hacía hablar Español!"(I knew I could make you speak Spanish for 5 cents!"

Sounds good! I think possibly we'll travel again (i had two readings saying that we would work overseas in the future), and of course the little ones will come along. (I want to sort a few things first and give birth in a cushy Aussie hospital not somewhere in the jungle). Multilingual babies! We are a English/French speaking family which i think will be great for my son later but i definitely see he takes much longer to talk as he's taking in two different languages.

Off-topic: I read this as "naked group". It's the first topic that got me to check out this area of the forum in over a year. I guess that shows where my mind is.

Anyways, if anyone does want to start a naked group, you know where to find me.
