Life is a living conscious field of experience and action. We are an inseparable part of the field, linked in our consciousness to everything and everyone else in the universe. Our consciousness is not separate and isolated. It is in active relationship with the world around us. Whatever we think or decide, aspire for, love or hate, desire and fear is in active relationship with us through our thoughts and feelings. Life Response is the capacity to attract or create favorable circumstances and events from the world around us that appear to occur by 'chance' or 'luck' rather than as a direct result of our own physical actions.

The Secret builds on this truth and tells us we can invoke the Law of attraction by concentrating the power of our consciousness on whatever it is we want to happen or come to us in live. In other words we have the power to make life respond to us.

In fact, life is responding to us all the time bringing into our environment people and circumstances that correspond with the vibrations of consciousness that we are emanating. Thus, our whole life is a mirror reflection of what we are inside, but often that reflection is inverted or refracted in a manner that we do not see the correspondences.

Chance, Luck and Coincidence
In pursuit of an important work, we want to meet a friend whom we have not met for a few years. On leaving our house, in a pleasant surprise, he enters our house. Life is full of such strange events. Literature too is teeming with such incidents. History has the same character. This phenomenon of ready help coming in an inconceivable fashion is called 'Life Response'. "Thank God, you have come," we exclaim. We also feel we are in luck. We are right.
This is not merely the caprice of Life. There is a law behind such occurrences. Some half a dozen such events described in detail and the laws
underlying explained will make it clear that such a phenomena follow their own rules. One who knows such rules will always discern how such events come to pass.

Make Life Respond
Those who do not submit to life, but rise above the social average and evoke the power of higher consciousness can make Life Respond. Life Response is a known phenomenon that most everyone observes at one time or another. But the capacity to evoke a Life Response is something more, but it is not totally unknown in life. Extraordinarily courageous people say, "Well, I have never been let down." Optimistic persons, when their hopeless project comes round, say, "I know it will come round." Life can come round to anyone who relies on a higher power of consciousness in life.

Life's Equilibrium
As material things on earth are held in equilibrium by gravitation, events, persons, and movements are held in equilibrium in life by the emotions of people. Life is amoral. We often see a dishonest person succeeding. In these moments we attribute his success to his money power or social influence, all of which are true, but each of them represents a partial truth. The complete Truth of this phenomenon is the emotional equilibrium in Life. Life seeks to maintain a balanced equilibrium of its energies. When that balance is disturbed, it seeks to restore the balance.

An excellent example which can be quoted to illustrate Life Response is "The Verdict". Though his partner says that things looked bleak and hopeless regarding the case , Frank insisted that THIS was the case. THIS was the case, which he repeated over and over. The power of intention was so great that shortly thereafter he discovered the missing witness in the form of the former nurse that would win him the case. Also, the betrayal by the woman who was his lover was suddenly revealed. It was double good fortune for Frank; i.e. it was life responding to the release of powerful energies emanating from Frank's Will. His power of intention (and his decisions and actions that followed it) was so great that it overwhelmed and overtook every other obstacle. His whole existence, which until that point had been a failure in his own mind, was now tied to that staggering intention. He then attracted Truth to his side, which nearly everyone recognized, including the crooked judge.

While consciousness seemingly creates through a human observer, I'm not convinced that consciousness is everyone and everywhere. To me consciousness creates everything in present moment awareness and then the human observer just observes.

It's a cunning illusion that the human observer has some kind of input, but it's minimal at best.

Ranganayaki is not talking about the impact of human observation as normally considered with regard to Quantum theory. She is saying that human consciousness -- our opinions and attitudes and inner psychological state -- have a direct and active bearing on the life events which occur in our immediate surroundings and impact on our life. This state tallies with my own experience and is confirmed by innumerable examples from life and literature, but it cannot be proved one way or another by mere intellectual discussion. It has to be observed and tested. I site a few examples
1. After searching for months for a greater path of knowledge, a book fell off the top shelf at a bookstore which changed the entire direction of life for my wife and myself 35 years ago. The book came in response to an intense inner aspiration and was exactly what I was looking for but did not know existed.
2. In Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, when Elizabeth Bennet finally decides that she should have accepted Darcy's marriage proposal, he arrives the next moment after an absence of many months. World literature is replete with sudden arrivals and 'chance' meetings that reflect a person's change in attitude or consciousness.
3. When my teacher in India asked me to take a firm decision for a psychological progress, he said if I do so, either my partner would call me from California or a close friend and client from Montreal because my decision relates to a corresponding point in their own psychological make-up. Five minutes later my client called me.
4. One night I decided to change my attitude about my co-author whose behavior I had deeply resent for various reasons. The next morning, I received the first message from him in at least one month in which he offered me a large consulting assignment, which marked the beginning of a new career.

True, my only problem with ancient mystical articulative prose, is that it makes my brain hurt
