| This is an excerpt from The Conscious Universe by Dean Radin, Ph.D. "A classic experiment by psychologist J.S. Bruner and Leo Postman demonstrated that sometimes what we see – or think we see – is not really there. Bruner and Postman created a deck of normal playing cards, except that some of the suit symbols were color-reversed. For example, the queen of diamonds had black-colored diamonds instead of red. The special cards were shuffled into an ordinary deck, and then as they were displayed one at a time, people were asked to identify them as fast as possible. The cards were first shown very briefly, too fast to identify them accurately. Then the display time was lengthened until all the cards could be identified. The amazing thing is that while all the cards were eventually identified with great confidence, no one noticed that there was anything out of the ordinary in the deck. People saw a black four of hearts as either a four of spades or as a normal four of hearts with red hearts. In other words, their expectations about what playing cards should look like determined what they actually saw. When the researchers increased the amount of time that the cards were displayed, some people eventually began to notice that something was amiss, but they did not know exactly what was wrong. One person, while directly gazing at a red six of spades, said, "That's the six of spades but there's something wrong with it—the black spade has a red border."' As the display time increased even more, people became more confused and hesitant. Eventually, most people saw what was before their eyes. But even when the cards were displayed for forty times the length of time needed to recognize normal playing cards, about 10 percent of the color-reversed playing cards were never correctly identified by any of the people! The mental discomfort associated with seeing something that does not match our expectations is reflected in the exasperation of one participant in the experiment who, while looking at the cards, reported, "I can't make the suit out, whatever it is. It didn't even look like a card that time. I don't know what color it is now or whether it's a spade or a heart. I'm not even sure what a spade looks like. My God!" " |

| There is more, from the same source: "Studies like this [see above] in the 1950s led psychologist Leon Festinger and his colleagues at Stanford University to develop the idea of cognitive dissonance. This is the uncomfortable feeling that develops when people are confronted by "things that shouldn't ought to be, but are." If the dissonance is sufficiently strong, and is not reduced in some way, the uncomfortable feeling will grow, and that feeling can develop into anger, fear, and even hostility. [in other words, resistance and negative energy] A pathological example of unresolved cognitive dissonance is represented by people who blow up abortion clinics in the name of Jesus. Also, to avoid unpleasant cognitive dissonance people will often react to evidence that disconfirms their beliefs by actually strengthening their original beliefs and creating rationalizations for the disconfirming evidence." It is all in our heads, folks. Change your beliefs and your life will change. |

Your head, your entire physical being is the only thing that you can never escape. Other heads/bodies/minds will come and go, but you will always be present and that is why you are consciousness because you are the observer of creation. You can never observe through someone else's head, you can only ever observe through one head, one human body, one observer. There is only ever one observer, one consciousness and one experience. When you change your beliefs your observation changes, no one else's changes, it may look like other people are changing their lives and environments, but it's only your environment that changes. | Ask me a specific question Mr. B and I will answer it, but keep in mind it is just my opinion. Works for me Max |

Is it possible to come up with some sort of a test, which would tell us when we act from pure consciousness and when we act from our ego? |

| you didn't ask me, but I'm gonna add my .02 consciousness doesn't act, ego is necessary for action - but like all things, ego is good in moderation Now, when ego aligns with consciousness and ego is aware of consciousness, it hands over power to consciousness. Ego is great as seeing contrast, at perceiving, gathering data (input), beliefs, judgment, and desires spring forth in ego (with consciousness as their source) after each new creation spurs new perceptions, desires, and choices. This is much like the conscious mind and the subconscious mind with ego as the conscious wakeful mind within the body reality and subconscious behind the scenes doing all the "Work". See when ego agrees to move over and let consciousness drive.... consciousness drives from the back seat. but alas, all consciousness is ONE - so ego and consciousness are actually ONE, but to express them as concepts it is helpful to separate the attributes. |

| Yes, the Yin-Yang. We get in trouble when there is no balance between the two, which is actually one. The question is not so much how to get to that balance, but how to know if you are taking action from it (the one). |

| Are you reacting to outward circumstance? then ego Are you proactively choosing your reality and assuming that state of being? then consciousness Last edited by torilink : 07-18-2007 at 04:20 AM. |

| Yes, I think that is easy to see for most people. Quote:

We can claim back some or most of our power, but consciousness will always maintain the illusion/perception/reality and stablise randomness. There's no point in it being completely predictable, that's for consciousness in it's perfect state. Actually a test (if there was one) would undermine the ego and while just a creation, consciousness is very proud and loves very much the observation point and the observer. As for who's driving? Taking a back seat doesn't mean to stop your humaness, it just means to identify more with creative power instead of denying it. Works for me Max Last edited by Max Power : 07-18-2007 at 05:45 AM. |

So that's what's wrong with me...cognitive dissonance. Very interesting.

| I made a thread asking why LofA works for me with some aspects of my life but never works with other apsects of my life. it sounds as if cognitive dissonance may be a reason why. cognitive dissonance At a nonextreme level of coarse. Im not on the verge of blowing anything up. So how does one get over the cognitive dissonance? When ever what I seek is in reach I fall into a mind state of irrational behavior, stress and anxiety until I mess every things up. The thing is the irrational behavior, stress and anxiety only make sense when I feel like Im actually moving forward and getting somewhere. other than that time I am beating my self up saying" what was I thinking?" so what could be the source of the conflicting thoughts or perceptions? How do I rid them, How do I fight through it, How do I completely align myself with that which would make me happiest? why do I allow myself to be driven into a state of apathy and unfulfilment? Im going to look into it more. |
