How To Find Your Deepest Desires In Your Favorite Movies

Hi all,

I recently posted an article on my website that gives you a new method to clearly define what you want to attract / manifest / etc.

I don't want to seem spammy here but I'd love some feedback on the concept as I'd like to incorporate it into a larger program in the future.

Please take a quick read and see what you think:

You can leave feedback here or on my site, either is fine.

Thanks,
Ken

Interesting. I went through the steps and was not at all surprised to see what came out of it, but I'm probably more aware than a lot of people. Still, it was interesting to see the themes repeated in the movies I favour.

It also indicated to me that it's time to let go of a particular theme in my life. I've been moving that way for a while, but seeing the same theme yet again made me kind of sigh and say to myself, "Yeah, okay, let's try something different now." So that was good.

I enjoyed the examples you gave from your own life, very helpful in understanding the process and how the films might be interpreted. (Glad to see you got the girl, but now I have that Hawaiian version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" stuck in my head!)

Oh, btw, Star Wars, Hero's Journey, uh.... yeah. Obviously. :D;)

One thing I might add is that you say to pick films that "inspire". I couldn't think of many, but I went with those. I actually have a lot of films I enjoy and have watched over and over, but they're not "inspiring", I just like them. I might go back and look at those with this same process later, but you might want to rethink "inspiring" because that's a very specific adjective and for me, it limited the scope of what came to mind.

I may do the process again with a wider range of favourite films (and not rely so much on being "inspired" ;)).

Hi, thanks for taking a look and I'm glad you found that it reaffirmed your existing understanding of your bliss.

I understand what you mean about "inspire" vs. "enjoy," for example. But I love Monty Python and the Holy Grail, too. I can probably quote most of the movie by heart but I don't think it speaks to me about my bliss. It says something about my personality, I suppose, just as it did for you but is that your bliss, being entertained?

I think the difference is choosing those movies where you would like to be like some part of it, be that character, have that mannerism, be in that place, do that thing, etc. That, to my mind, is inspiration and the path to bliss.

It'll be interesting to see what others have to say as well.

Thanks again!

For those who are confused, I edited my post prior to Ken's reply. I did, indeed, mention Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but then took it out because it seemed a bit indulgent. ;)

No, it's more being silly. Being funny and silly, with no need to be anything else. :)

Right, then, anything with Brad Pitt, preferably naked.... :p

Well, I got it after the fact. Just at first, the whole "inspired" thing kind of threw me a bit. I suspect I'm not the only person who has the same association with the word, but maybe it is just me.

Indeed.

You know, this could be expanded this by getting people to work on films they did NOT like. In a lot of cases, the answer is going to be, "Because it was just a bad film," but sometimes.... I was particularly repulsed by "AI", just as one example, and that's because it triggered a lot of abandonment issues for me. There are probably other films I dislike for similar kinds of reasons. It's not about bliss, but it can be helpful for finding stuff that needs to be addressed, and which can certainly stand in the way of bliss.

Bringing awareness to the subconscious mind and all likes/dislikes (desires) will be revealed however it’s recognizing the illusion of these likes/dislikes that proves useful.

It's all an illusion. All the likes, dislikes, preferences, personality traits, everything. There is no discrete "self", the whole of reality is a kind of dream. Isn't that a given?

But, the fact is, a lot of people aren't there. Will NEVER be there. Most people will never be able to achieve anything like lucidity in this ongoing dream that is the story that forms what they think of as their life, and that is - believe it or not - actually okay!

In the meantime, it can be a fun game to explore the subconscious, illusion though it be. Getting to know this character we play can have its own rewards, even when/if we realise it's nothing but a character.

My position is that for whatever reason, Awareness is here, pretending to be me, in this make believe setting that is "reality", so I may as well explore it.

Ken Benjamin 10-19-2011 05:31 PM

Illusion or not

I don't think it matters whether or not it's an illusion.

Your likes are your likes, your personality your personality, and your experiences your experiences.

The truth is that it's worth the time to figure out how to align yourself such that what you do in the objective world or what you choose to pursue in the subjective world is in alignment with who you are.

For example, I'm not especially interested in manifesting money. I like money and I'm happy to earn money but it's not a point of bliss for me. I'm much more interested in intellectual challenge but that's me and my personality type (ENTP, in case you're wondering).

I think that certain perspectives work better for certain personality types and are also dependent upon your experience.

My goal here is to help people live fulfilled lives based on proper alignment of their bliss with their actions.

Following the path of non-duality limits your range to a sort of neutral space that may be peaceful but isn't necessarily the only path to that peace and it isn't necessarily the shortest path either.

Personally, I'd rather spend my time engaged in my bliss than in acceptance of non-bliss. But that's just me.

Let's face it, some of us find the Knights Who Say Ni! annoying and some of us just find them patently absurd. Objective reality or subjective reality. Both have their place. I just tend to live more on the objective side.

Best wishes,
Ken

Oh, and Ms. Caterpillar, I forgot to ask, if you don't think that "inspire" is the right word, what would you suggest instead?

ButterflyWoman 10-19-2011 06:52 PM

Oh, hmmm. I dunno. Didn't get that far. Maybe several words like, "excite, captivate, inspire" something like that, so "inspire" isn't in isolation? Hmmm...

and suffering continues.

Thanks!

I'll take your suggestion for multiple words and make a edit to the post.

I'll hit up the thesaurus for some other ideas, too.

What's a synonym for thesaurus, anyhow?

Actually, I'm pretty darn happy following my bliss.

Don't get me wrong, I understand what you are suggesting. I do accept that my perception of suffering is the the basic nature of suffering. On the other hand, so is my joy.

I don't crave, I do what I do and I enjoy it. Perhaps that's a subtle difference but suffering? I'm not there. Trust me, I know what suffering feels like. I'm not there.

Follow your bliss or follow the Buddha (or other non-dual path). Both are viable paths to peace. I'm just choosing one over the other (and borrowing some middle way and other good stuff from the Buddha).

Again, that's just me. I'm pleased that you've found your own path to peace.

Be well,
Ken

Updated to reflect your suggestions and some other words, too, like motivate, move, touch, and feel. I dropped excite, seems too much like that would draw action movies to the list, if understood differently than you meant it.

Hey, anyone else have comments on my method? I notice I've had some visitors but not much feedback.

I'd love to hear what you think, good or bad.

Seem's like a good concept to discover your "bliss" as you say, and also what key words describe your bliss. And then to put those words around you and try and live by them, I do like your approach. I would imagine someone who really doesn't know what they wish to do in life, would find much benefit from this simple technique. It would give someone a more concrete formula for having a "path" in life, all lined up for them.

I choose 3 movies, that inspired me to give it a try, they were:

1. The Matrix

2. Being There (with Peter Sellers)

3 Jesus of Montreal (a Canadian movie in french with english subtitles)

I already knew of the words I could extract from these movies, since I already live by them, to some extent, so I wasn't in the dark at all for finding my bliss. I do alot of post's on these boards about angels, which answers much as to why these movies attract me or inspire me.

I do like your approach Ken and think your method of using movies is a good one and also will make it easy and fun for others to discover their bliss. So you get a big thumbs-up from me!

Glad you liked it!

It's one of several techniques I'm using for this purpose, including Steve's Find Your Life Purpose In 20 Minutes. That's also good but I think in a different way.

I'm delighted to hear you have found your bliss but not everyone has, so I hope this will help.

Warmest regards,
Ken
