Decades ago, I saw a re-run of an episode of the 1960s sitcom "My Favorite Martian" that set forth a premise that seems applicable to the LoA. The premise was: holding absolute belief that a power exists and will work causes that power to work as such. In the episode, Bill Bixby had to climb up the side of a cliff to rescue a boy who was stranded near the top. There was great urgency in this mission, and Ray Walston (the Martian) passionately urged Bill to rescue the boy. However, Bill was desperately afraid of heights and could not imagine himself doing so--the fear alone would cause him to fall. The Martian reassured Bill that could not fail in his climb up the canyon wall, nor could he fall, thanks to an "anti-gravity" device that the Martian held in his hand. Trusting this to be true, Bill began his climb up the very high cliff. The Martian aimed his "anti-gravity" device toward Bill, which device looked like a walky-talky apparatus. Up and up Bill climbed, amazed at his sense of ease and lack of fear, as a crowd of spectators grew larger and larger at the base level below. Bill was on his way to becoming a real hero, and he beamed with pride up the ascent, a hand placed here, and a foot placed there! Suddenly, an excited spectator turned to the Martian and exclaimed, "He's doing it! He's going to reach the top! Wow!" The spectator was so excited that he inadvertently knocked the "anti-gravity" device out of the Martian's hand, causing it to malfunction. For the remainder of his very steep climb, Bill was actually climbing on his own, without the aid of the "anti-gravity" device. The Martian was worried sick because the he knew that Bill was not being supported by the "anti-gravity" beam and could fall at any moment. Once in a while, Bill would stumble and slip a little, as a piece of rock supporting his hand or foot would break off the cliff and hurl to the ground far below. The Martian turned white as a ghost. Nevertheless, trusting in the "anti-gravity" device, Bill shook off his fears and continued. He reached the boy near the summit of the cliff, placed the boy on his back, and then descended all the way down to the ground below. Everyone cheered and all was well--until Bill learned that the Martian's device had malfunctioned halfway up the canyon wall. Bill was stunned and simply could not fathom that he traversed the entire way without any assistance from an outside source. It was too much to bear. Bill fainted on the spot. In the end, it was Bill's belief in the infallibility of the "anti-gravity" device that allowed him to rescue the boy and bring him down from the cliff. And so it goes with the LoA. Trusting the LoA is EVERYTHING. If one believes in a law that governs the outcomes of beliefs, then the manifestations of such beliefs will be consciously directed and largely predicable. The law will seem to "work." A shaky belief in the LoA will produce less than desired results because the general, dominant thought will be of intermittent convictions. I find that the more I trust in the LoA as an infallible, precise, scientific truth, the more I can leave my efforts to visualizing clearly and manifesting my dreams. Indeed, Charles Hannel once quipped that our true work lies not in trying to make our dreams come true, but in believing that the LoA is scientifically precise and certain. Once we commit to such a belief, the LoA will take care of the rest--like a Martian's "ant-gravity" device. |
