What do you hope to achieve?
I think you need to put some parameters around what you hope to accomplish, and realize self hypnosis is a tool towards that goal.
Example: You want to lose weight - then along with other things you might be doing, i.e. diet and excercise plans, you may listen to a self hypnosis CD that installs a belief that you are meant to be thin.
Example: You want to create more wealth - then to help your cash generation you may want to use a self hypnosis CD to install a new belief that you are meant to have wealth.
Actually, I would say removing a limiting belief is more important to start, before you install new beliefs. Steve mentions Morty Lefkoe, and I agree, this is the basis of all change. You may be driven by a set of beliefs installed, without your knowledge, in childhood. These simple beliefs will prevent you from taking the simple actions you need to acheive health, wealth, relationships, and happiness. If you detect and remove these beliefs, it can allow you to take the actions, without hidden counter intentions, to achieve your goals.
I mentioned weight loss. Well, that's easy. Just eat under 1800 calories a day of protein, vegetables, and non saturated fats, and do 400 calories worth of excercise. That's it. But to get yourself to do that, you need to get rid of those subconscious beliefs "If I lose weight, people will be attracted to me and hurt me", "Why try, it will never work", "My family is genetically fat", "I have to eat to feel good", etc.
Back to the CD, after you remove those limiting beliefs, you can use the hypnosis to install new beliefs "I was meant to have a healthy, attractive body", "I love having a lean, sexy body".
Short answer: You know it's working when you are achieving your objective. But first, you need an objective. And usually those are Body, Wealth, Relationships, Happiness.

When you notice your perception changing (regarding what the hypnosis influences). Note that sometimes it is a slow process that you barely even notice happening, but change is happening. You need some dedication to change your subconscious.

I agree with the above..but on a more immediate level I know when I'm in touch with my subconscious because I feel slightly like Im leviatating off the bed and my toes tingle
This is after a year on/off self hypnosis plus having hypnotherapy, so it may take a while
keep at it

If you are looking for some miraculous change in your circumstances as a result of hypnosis you may be looking for a long time. Let me clarify, hypnosis, like many IM techniques, engages your subconscious mind and basically changes your operating system...if you do that properly your circumstances will change but it won't seem spectacular to you because those changes will simply be your new reality. It will be a new you experiencing their "normal" reality.
I saw a hypnotherapist over 10 years ago to help me quit smoking and it worked like magic, spectacular results. The reason I knew it worked was because I quit smoking, the amazing thing was that I didn't want to smoke, I simply didn't smoke. No bells, trumpets, levitation, amazing feats of willpower saying no to cigs, I just simply didn't want them any longer.
Hope this helps.
