Default Disengaging from Unhelpful Behaviors

Part 2 of my previous thread.

I have decided to create a new thread to give myself a fresh start and take on 100% responsibility for my actions.

FAQ:
-I'm a 21 year old girl
- I am currently choosing to work with a Psychiatrist, Psychologist and GP.
- I take 100% responsibility for my current stage, thoughts, feelings and behaviors

- I have been engaging in behaviors broadly classed as 'Eating Disordered' for ten years and now wish to disengage from them and explore the underlying feelings and issues I was masking by using my Eating Disorder.

Amazing how a word change can convey so much.

I feel like I'm not 'beating' bulimia, I am just learning to make better choices.

Sounds like you are relaxed and determined to beat this...which means you will

I won't say "good luck" because I believe we make our own luck. Instead I will say I support you in this change.

I know two people who were bulimic who became 80/10/10 raw fooders. Maybe bulimia is just a mischannelled desire to look good? Anyway if you take up this diet you'll lose weight and become radiant... and you can and should eat as much as you want on it. Give it a consideration maybe

Apart from that, I have no salient ideas... just, lots of support and love to you.

Thank you Elucidate. Lots of warm love and support for you too.

Thanks Andrew. A raw diet is an interesting idea. I am giving it some consideration. Could you clarify what you mean by 80/10/10?
One thing I am currently taking from the Raw Food approach is the benifits of staying away from processed foods. I am currently moving away from them and towards fruits and salads. Baby steps.

Cool

Well, the term 80/10/10 comes from Douglas Graham's book, "the 80/10/10 Diet". I think this is the best book on diet out there. 80/10/10 refers to 80% carbohydrate, 10% protein, 10% fat (as percentage of total calories eaten). It's an approach to raw food that focuses on fruit and makes nuts, avocadoes etc a very small portion of the diet. 10% fat is actually a maximum, and 80% carbohydrate is actually minimum; as far as I know there are no adverse effect from removing fat sources from your diet altogether (what small amount of fat we need, is found in fruit and vegetables; about 5% average of their calories).

The wonderful thing about this diet for people with bulimic tendencies (and I have binge eaten in the past, though I didn't quite get to that point) is that to get enough calories from fruit to satiate you, you have to eat a lot. Overeating, while hard, is not a problem either to your health or to your waistline, and is almost encouraged; the enemy is undereating. Basically turns normal food paradigms on their head.

And once you get used to it, I think fruit is pretty damn delicious. Nowadays I don't envy cooked food eaters at all.

I'm also interested in a raw diet (even though I'd need more than 10% fat or my skin would get so dry...that's what happened when I was vegan anyway).

I had anorexia & bulimia for 5 years (recovered now) but one of the side effects from it is that a lot of foods make me want to puke; I can't control it & it's so annoying! My taste buds are so incredibly f**ked up because the last time I ate like a normal person was when I was 10, a lot of things taste disgusting to me. The only thing I can eat that doesn't make me sick is most processed junk & most fruit & veggies. Oh & herbal tea.

All the best to you, butterflyeffect,

I think you made a good start by creating a new thread here. Writing sometimes helps for things like this, keep posting your feelings and progress. There are lots of people here to support you.
I'm a bit of gardener so I grow some veggies and fruits in my backyard. I don't feel like buying food from shops when I can wait for a little to harvest my own food because they taste better. I thought this might interest you too.

Thank you everyone for all your love.

Sarah, its interesting you say that your taste buds feel messed up. So do mine. I feel as if I can only tolerate a limited number of foods or I get nauseous and want to throw up. For me though I suspect its because they I have some anxiety surrounding them that needs to be worked through. Processed foods don't agree with me though even though I like how easy and removed they are.

I have thought about doing some gardening. Funnily enough the only things I am interested in gardening are things I can eat...so I think I may start with a nice non edible pot plant. Break away from the food obsession a little bit. Although I am interested in moving towards eating more organic foods and buying from local markets.

My current challenge is to introduce variety to my diet. I prefer to eat the same things constantly. I feel resistant to changing because I like the security of knowing exactly what I am going to eat but I am prepared to let that go. So I am introducing different foods into my diet and planning to make a food chart to allow for variety and following of my meal plan. My body will love it and after the inital anxiety passes I am sure I will too.
