 |  Reading the news and studying history?
So... I want to work towards international peace between people and countries. In order to do this, I need to know what situations people are in, so I have to read the news and history... but spending several hours reading about past and current death and destruction can't be all that good to do in light of LoA. I've tried completely cutting myself off from all negative news and negative stories, but the deal with that is I end up completely cutting myself off from other people's lives as well - the situation doesn't cease to exist... What are you guys' thoughts? |

One quick thing I can recommend regarding news is that if you must watch them, choose websites or TV news programs that are neutral; that focus on the issues without taking sides. Stay away from news shows or channels that claim to be "fair and balanced", but are nothing more than a propaganda machine for a political party. That will not only save you time, but also help you focus on the actual problem, which will help the flow of ideas and solutions through your brain. |

The best way to bring about international peace is to BE that peace your Self, and establish it between all of YOUR relationships... allowing it to spread organically out. Get involved in organisations that matter to you, and then be the Peace within those organisations... I'm still working on it for me, and I too gave up reading the news and history because it's all presented from a particualr viewpoint. News is storytelling, and storytelling seeks to find conflict, without conflict, there can't be any drama... Much joy, Kara-Leah |

I love history. I do not enjoy the news. I read/watch the news only as necessary. However, allowing in history and the news does not mean that I allow such input to permeate my sense of well-being unless I let it. I struggled for a short time with (a perceived conflict between) my love of thrillers/horror/historical sagas and my desire for a personally peaceful life. I ultimately realized that the two are not mutually exclusive. There is a part of us that deeply craves stories. This has always been the case and probably always will be (Joseph Campbell's work can teach you about stories/myths and the role that they play in all of our lives). Stories are generally not about peace and hand-holding; if they are truly only about that, they are simply boring. We look to history, stories, and (sometimes) the news to satisfy our need for the dramatic and our fascination with the human condition ... and how it all relates to us. Otherwise, we should shun most movies, books, plays, etc. ... including the greats (such as Shakespeare). So take in your entertainment, your history, and (sometimes) your news ... and realize that these things quench your creative thirst and your need to connect with the world. But these things do not need to become your world. |
