Like many other techniques for meditation, it is a trick to help you calm your mind. Following your breath or feeling light contact between your thumbs requires just enough attention that your mind chatter can't continue.

Feel free to experiment with meditation positions. I've had some of my most interesting meditations in a kneeling position, (like a muslim prayer position).
This position was easier on my back and allowed me to go deeper because my body was more relaxed.
See what works best for you. The point being to relax your mind without falling asleep.
