Default Preparing for Emergency

What do you think? Is preparing for emergency situations, natural disasters, or nuclear meltdowns simply a LOA invitation for those things to occur or is being prepared smart?

I've been considering stockpiling some water, food, and medicine in the basement - just in case.

Hey, Michelle. I recently put on an event on emergency preparedness with a panel that included the top earthquake expert in Los Angeles and reps from the Red Cross and Rand Corp.

They all agreed on two things: make sure you always have shoes within easy reach at your home, cuz they're the first thing you'll need; and make sure you have a plan to reunite your family in case you're separated. They recommended designating a friend or family in another state or country to be your family's point person, program it into your cell phone and drill your kids in memorizing that phone number and email address.

They also said keeping a small stockpile of food, water and first aid is probably a good idea.

Stockpile water, food, and medicine because you choose to. Don't do it because of a imagined future event. If you feel moved right now to stock up on a few things, go ahead, but put no reasoning behind it. Maybe in a month or two you'll say, "time to clean out the basement" and get rid of it all.

There might actually be an event coming soon, and you're getting the inkling to support yourself for that event -- much like the animals in Thailand got to high ground before the tsunami hit. The event may never come (things can always take a different course) and you'll have a basement full of stuff, and the mind will say "what a waste that was" when actually you were being very responsive to something in your awareness in that moment.

If preparing for a possible disaster allows you to stop worrying and running scenarios in your mind it would actually have the opposite effect since you would no longer be constantly thinking about it, you would actually be in harmony with or vibrating "security". Now, if your preparing is just done to act out your fears that is a different thing, you would still be in fear.

Yeah, evaluating the likelihood of something happening (like an earthquake here in L.A.!) and preparing yourself (as opposed to obsessing) doesn't create it into being. It's like taking a sweater to the Hollywood Bowl in case it gets chilly. Or keeping an umbrella in your trunk. Or shaving your legs before a hot date. (oh, wait -- that one might actually be intention manifestation!)

Make sure to buy a few of these.

And no, I don't think emergency preparation is negative from an IM standpoint. You are manifesting independence, preparation and personal responsibility.

God I hope so, I'd hate to think I'm doing it for emergency preparedness!

Dharma, I could just kiss you right now. This little bit just made something (completely unrelated to this post) suddenly make perfect sense. Thanks for saying it!

Yep. It makes sense that preparing could contribute to a sense of safety and help one relax.

For some reason I have the feeling like this is something I HAVE to do NOW. Strange. Maybe it is just that I will feel better when it is done. And yep, we are getting a manually powered flashlight, charger and radio.
