Good god, you must be my morning synkro, right on time.

Let's see... a couple months ago I posted music online for the first time. I was thrilled and excited then my ego somehow made me "learn a new program so I can really be pro" and now I realize I was trying to stop myself by giving myself busy work.

This weekend I got some new equipment for my home studio though. This morning I drove to work, and was listening to my iPod. For a moment I thought of putting my own music on but felt uncomfortable about it (and I really do like my own music) and I asked myself "Why am I avoiding playing my own music?", then I see this thread.

So thanks for the push. I can't run away from my dreams like this.

Don't be shy about showing off your work to the public. Artists often tend to undervalue their own work, because they always think it could be better. But users and buyers may perceive it quite differently.
I am selling illustrations on various microstock sites, and it was a revelation to me how well even quite simple illustrations may sell. Even if something is simple to make for me it may still have enough value for a buyer to spend some bucks on it.

I think you need feedback and encouragement. I think most successful people do not in fact come out of nowhere to achieve the success they enjoy. There are steps along the way that they achieve and that leads them further along the path. If you have enjoyed ever-more successful ventures then set you sights on something bigger and better. If not, then yes, maybe time to reevaluate things. Look at the people that turn up for auditions on American Idol and programs like that. Most are living in a private dream world. Giving up on your dreams is tough but being brutally honest with yourself is an important part of your growth and development too I think.

Thanks for the responses guys. What's interesting to me is the more I seem to accept myself, the more enthused I am to develop my talents, and let them take me where they will take me.

It's one thing to "face reality", it's another thing to not even try. The fact is I've been developing my craft for years, but just as I get to the point I'm going to put it out there--I hesitate. But there is no need for that anymore.

It matters to me. Hopefully it will matter to others, but as long as I'm my number one fan, there's no reason to not create and develop.

My cousin is a musician and recently I went to see him play, there were only two of us in the crowd, and he told me it did not matter if there were two or two thousand people watching, he still plays the same... He gave one hell of a performance... Dont know why this is relevant, but seems like it may be....

It's relevant because he's gotten to the point that the approval of others is not his main objective. He's avoided hours of over-analyzing, second-guessing, fear of success or failure, he's just doing the work. That's what I must do.
